MESSAGE FROM THE STR PROGRAM CHAIR

    Michael Leiblein, Program Chair
    Spring 2021

Greetings! The 2021 AOM Annual Meeting will be held July 29th through August 4th on your favorite zoom channel. As we have nearly finalized the STR conference program, I can now share some highlights of this year's program (as a follow-on to my message in May). I hope you will find this year's program to be chock-full of interesting research addressing canonical problems in the strategic management field.

This year's program takes into account not only the content of your work but also any presentation time preferences you provided during submission. Ultimately, we were able to schedule within 90 minutes of any requested time slot. Given the global nature of our membership, it was not possible to schedule sessions at a time that is convenient for every STR member. In instances were a sub-optimal time slot was scheduled, I hope that you will join me in making the best of a few very early morning or very late night sessions!

    STR Virtual Program Highlights:

The following table lists a few of the highlights associated with the 2021 STR Main Program. All times listed are Eastern Time to maintain consistency with the AoM program. Additional data on the submission and evaluation process for the 2021 program are included in my May letter to the division. The AoM will broadcast the full 2021 STR Program later this summer.

    Plenary Session

We will kick off the main program with the STR Plenary on Monday from 9:00am-10:30 am ET. This year, the STR division plenary session is entitled "Managing Tensions between Stakeholder and Shareholder Objectives." The panel will be moderated by Tim Folta (Division Chair) and include comments by two leading CEOs (Jim Snabe - Chairman of Maersk and Siemens, and Davis Smith - CEO of Cotopaxi) who have effectively managed this complexity, and two leading scholars (Jay Barney - University of Utah, and Subi Rangan - INSEAD) who push the boundary of our understanding of this topic.

    Business Meeting & Social

We will provide summary information on division business and recognize various awards at our STR Business Meeting (from 10:00-11:00am ET on Tuesday).

In addition to the traditional Glueck Best Paper Award, Litschert Best Doctoral Student Paper Award, Ghoshal Research and Practice Award, and Wiley Blackwell Outstanding Dissertation Award, we will also recognize the best paper within each of our eight topical tracks. At this meeting, we will also recognize those outstanding reviewers who provided especially detailed, constructive, and timely feedback.

This year we will also offer three social events spread out across multiple days and during evening hours in Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

    Program Paper and Symposium Sessions:

Historically, STR has organized its sessions using eight topic tracks. The STR division continues to use these tracks to organize our virtual offerings throughout the conference.

It may also be useful to note that the Academy of Management is supporting three forms of presentation format this year.

    • ASYNCHRONOUS (ON DEMAND; NOT LIVE): Session content is available on demand at any time after the conference starts. Pre-recorded videos and other contributed material (e.g., presentation slides, paper submissions) are available for viewing at any time, on demand. Discussion and feedback can occur in session chat, but participants are not expected to be available at any specific time or date.
    • SYNCHRONOUS LIVE PRESENTER - Live-stream Presenter ("webinar" style): Presenter(s) / panelists are on video sharing content (e.g., presentation slides, screens). Sessions become available at a specific date and time. Question and answers from audience are text based. Technical setup and facilitation provided.
    • SYNCHRONOUS LIVE OPEN - Live-stream Open ("meeting" style): Presenter(s) / panelists and entire audience are on video. Anyone can share content (e.g., presentation slides, screens) with organizer's approval. Sessions become available at a specific date and time. Breakout rooms are available. Technical setup and facilitation provided.

    Program Access/Tech Support

AOM is inviting authors of all accepted papers to post videos of their paper presentation to the online platform. All registered participants will have access to chat discussions of their presentations. In addition, the AoM default is to record all sessions in the main program. All registered participants will be able to access all sessions for some time after the virtual program has concluded (likely August-September). For all synchronous sessions, AoM will provide tech support fifteen minutes prior to the start time of each session (and throughout each synchronous session). More information will be provided from AoM as we get closer to the conference dates.

    Thank you

In closing, thank you for your contributions and efforts. And, above all, please continue to share your thoughts about the distinctive contributions of strategic management scholarship!
