In recent years formal modeling has steadily become an accepted method in management research and has been used in studying diverse topics. Yet, given that this method is relatively new to the management audience, there is still some ambiguity around the effective use of this method and its role in the strategy research. This PDW brings together scholars with experience in the use of formal models in different areas of strategy research to discuss the benefits and the challenges associated with formal models, suggest best practices in developing formal models, explore how this method can contribute to the strategy theory and outline promising areas for the use of formal models. The PDW will serve as both a communication channel between experts and learners and a community of learning for those interested in formal modeling.

This PDW is aimed at PhD students and faculty who wish to improve their skills as consumers or producers of the formal models, as well as those who want to learn more about this method. The workshop does not require prior knowledge and is intended for participants at any level.

The PDW was originally accepted to the annual AoM conference and is now being held online as a part of the STRonger Together initiatives by the STR division.

    The format of PDW:

The PDW will consist of a 90-min panel session and a 30-min roundtable session.

The 90-min panel session will address the following topics:

    • Benefits and tradeoffs of formal models
    • Challenges and choices in developing formal models
    • How to start developing formal models
    • How to leverage formal models for empirical research
    • How can formal models contribute to management research
    • Future avenues for formal modeling in management theory

It will be followed by a 30-min roundtable session where participants would be able to discuss with the panelists in small groups. There will be four breakout rooms:

    • Writing and presenting papers with formal models (Richard Makadok and Elena Plaksenkova)
    • Developing formal models (Leonardo Kluppel and David Gaddis Ross)
    • Using formal models for empirical research (Aseem Kaul and Hong Luo)
    • The role and future avenues of formal modeling in management research (Jiao Luo and Feng Zhu)

    How to participate:

The PDW will take place on July 20, 2020, 1 pm – 3 pm EDT.

To participate in the PDW please use the following link to register: https://rb.gy/ratdrx

Panel session is open to all registered participants. To participate in the roundtable session you will need to register separately: please email at formalmodelaom@gmail.com indicating two roundtables that you would be most interested in joining by July 15, 2020. Please use the email that you indicated at the registration in the panel session. We will have limited space in the breakout rooms, so the places and the preferences will be accommodated on the first-come, first-serve basis. Participants will be notified of their roundtables and receive the Zoom link the day before the PDW.
