The June 8 deadline for STR's Doctoral and Dissertation Consortia is approaching! In recognition of the potential challenges this year, STR will pay the registration fees for all students accepted to these consortia. Students must be STR members to be eligible.

Strategic Management Division (STR) Virtual Doctoral and Dissertation Consortia 2020

Due to the cancellation of the physical meeting of the 2020 Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management, The Strategic Management Division (STR) will hold the Doctoral and Dissertation Consortia virtually. (Please see the table below to identify which consortium is right for you.)

 

The STR Doctoral Consortium is intended for students who are in the dissertation proposal stage of their PhD programs.  The objective of the consortium is to support doctoral students as they shape their dissertations.  Students will have opportunities to discuss their work in small groups with distinguished faculty and peers, to meet and interact with future colleagues, and to enhance their scholarship, teaching and overall development.

The 2020 STR Doctoral Consortium will have synchronous and asynchronous components as well as options to join virtual discussion sessions in the US and Asia. The synchronous meetings will be held on Friday, August 7 and August 8, 2020 from 8 am to 12:00 pm EST.

The 2020 Doctoral Consortium co-chairs are John Joseph (University of California Irvine) and Isin Guler (University of North Carolina). The tentative faculty panel includes (by last name in alphabetic order): Nick Argyres (Washington University), Victor Bennett (Duke University), Guoli Chen (INSEAD), Russ Coff (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Andrea Contigiani (Ohio State University), Sinziana Dorobantu (New York University), Vibha Gaba (INSEAD), Srividya Jandhyala (ESSEC), Sonali Shah (University of Illinois), Bart Vanneste (University College London), and Natalya D Vinokurova (University of Pennsylvania).

Interested students should apply via the application website no later than June 8th, 2020.  All applicants will be notified of admission decisions by the end of June 2020.

The application website will request the following information:

1. Cover Letter.  You will be asked to submit a "cover letter" describing your interest in the Strategic Management division, and why the STR Doctoral Consortium is the best fit for you. Please also indicate the number of years you will have participated in your PhD program by September 2020 and your expected dissertation proposal defense date. Note that when submitting the letter you will be required to confirm that: (a) you are applying to the STR Doctoral Consortium only (and not the STR Dissertation Consortium), (b) your primary division of interest is Strategic Management, (c) you will attend the STR Doctoral Consortium if accepted, and (d) you commit to accept an invitation to only one doctoral consortium at the 2020 AOM meeting.  You should enter the text of your letter in the space provided on the application website (no attachments). 
2. Nomination Letter.  Have your dissertation chairperson write a nomination letter (on letterhead).  The letter should verify that you are working on your dissertation proposal and state your dissertation proposal defense date.  Please upload as a PDF (only).  Please name the file as follows: LastName-FirstName-Nomination.pdf.  If your chairperson would prefer to send us a nomination letter privately he / she may do so by emailing it to johnj2@uci.edu, but please indicate on the form if that is the case. Space permitting, we will work to accommodate multiple students from a single institution; if space is limited, only one student per institution will be admitted.
3. Curriculum Vitae.  You will be asked to upload your current CV.  Please upload as a PDF (only).  Please name the file as follows: LastName-FirstName-CV.pdf.
4. Dissertation Abstract.  You will be asked for a 200 word abstract of your dissertation proposal.  Please identify 3-5 keywords at the end of the abstract.  Note that your abstract will be distributed to other consortium participants. You should enter the text of your abstract in the space provided on the application website (no attachments).       
5. Dissertation Summary.  You will be asked for a summary of your dissertation proposal (2 page maximum). Please upload as a PDF (only).  Please name the file as follows: LastName-FirstName-Summary.pdf.

The STR Dissertation Consortium is intended for those PhD students who are in the advanced stages of their programs and who are considering the job market during the 2020-2021 academic year (i.e., for faculty positions that begin in Fall 2021). The focus of the STR Dissertation Consortium will be on providing participating students with an opportunity to discuss their job market papers in small groups with distinguished faculty and peers for high-quality, developmental feedback.

The 2020 Dissertation Consortium will be held on Friday and Saturday, August 7^th and 8^th from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm EST, preceded by a hosted networking happy hour the evening before, on Thursday, August 6th. We will also be using breakout groups during coffee breaks to facilitate student networking.

The co-chairs of the 2020 Dissertation Consortium are Catherine Magelssen (London Business School) and Luis Ballesteros (George Washington University). The faculty panel includes (by last name in alphabetic order): Theresa Cho (Seoul National University), Ilya Cuypers (Singapore Management University), Andrew Delios (National University of Singapore), JP Eggers (NYU), Javier Gimeno (INSEAD), Ha Hoang (ESSEC), Suresh Kotha (University of Washington), Elena Kulchina (NC State), Toby Stuart (UC Berkeley), and Dennis Yao (Harvard Business School).

Priority for admission to the 2020 Dissertation Consortium will be given to students who: (1) have completed drafts of their job market papers, and (2) have not previously attended the STR Doctoral Consortium. However, any doctoral student who is considering to enter the job market and graduate during the 2020-2021 academic year (and who is not applying to the 2020 Doctoral Consortium) may apply. We understand that this year poses significant challenges for students on the job market. We therefore intend cover how to maneuver the challenges and considerations of this year's market, crafting your elevator pitch, and also focus on providing developmental feedback for the publication process on student job market papers.

Which STR consortium is right for you?

What Stage of the Doctoral Program Are You In?	The STR Doctoral Consortium is intended for students who are in the dissertation proposal stage of their PhD programs.	The STR Dissertation Consortium is intended for students in the later stage of their programs and considering the job market during the 2020-2021 academic year (i.e. for faculty positions that begin in Fall 2021).

Key Difference	The STR Doctoral Consortium is focused on issues related to shaping your dissertation. The STR Dissertation Consortium is focused on job-market and publication related issues.
