STR 2019 Managing Your Dissertation Workshop

Saturday, August 10, 2019

Pre-registration Deadline: July 15, 2019

The STR Managing Your Dissertation Workshop will be offered as a pre-conference activity for doctoral students in strategy at the 2019 Academy of Management Meeting in Boston. The workshop takes place from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon on Saturday, August 10. The workshop is open to all doctoral students. The workshop offers practical advice to advanced doctoral students on completing their dissertations and transitioning to their first academic positions. Pre-registration from students is required.

The workshop will be conducted in an informal setting where students will be able to interact with faculty and other students in small groups. The finalists for last year’s STR Outstanding Dissertation Award share the coordination of the workshop. These finalists are: Colleen Cunningham (PhD Duke), Jin Hyung Kim (PhD Harvard), Yong Kim (PhD Michigan), Cameron Miller (PhD Minnesota), Koen van den Oever (PhD Tilburg), and Sruthi Thatchenkery (PhD Stanford). The format of the PDW will mix plenary presentations by senior faculty followed by Q&A’s, and breakout discussion groups led by last year’s finalists for the STR Outstanding Dissertation Award.  The following is a partial list of faculty members who have agreed to participate in the workshop: Ashish Arora (Duke), Jerry Davis (Michigan), Xavier Martin (Tilburg), Jordan Siegel (Michigan), and PK Toh (UT-Austin).

If you are a doctoral student in strategy, you are encouraged to attend. Small group discussion will allow for interaction of people at similar stages. Topics to be covered include: (a) managing a dissertation committee, (b) considerations on research design, (c) practical and technical issues associated with data collection, (d) seeking a job and preparing the job talk, (e) writing and defending the dissertation, and (f) carving up the dissertation into papers for publication.

Interested doctoral students should pre-register at https://forms.gle/VVszEHRF6eYST7HV7. The deadline to pre-register is July 15th, 2019. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged. If you have any questions, please contact Sruthi Thatchenkery (s.thatchenkery@ucl.ac.uk).

Saturday, August 10 (tentatively at 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm)

Registration Deadline: June 15, 2019

The Strategic Management Division will once again sponsor a Mid-Career Consortium at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management. The Mid-Career Consortium is for STR faculty members who completed their dissertation before August 2014 and have at least five years of academic experience. The objective of the workshop is to facilitate networking and discussion around the unique professional challenges, problems and opportunities facing STR faculty moving into their “Associate Professor Years.”

At the Mid-Career Consortium in Boston, participants will interact with a panel of senior faculty members including Phil Bromiley (UC-Irvine), Laura Cardinal (Univ. of South Carolina), Glen Hoetcker (Melbourne BS), Dovev Lavie (Bocconi), Taco Reus (Rotterdam), Violina Rindova (USC) and Kevin Steensma, (Univ. of Washington). We will discuss a range of issues in small groups, including topics such as managing competing demands, changing your outlook/emphasis post tenure, launching a new or reorienting your research focus, when to think about changing schools, and taking on leadership roles. The discussions will be followed by an informal cocktail reception and further conversations.

The 2019 STR Consortium will be chaired by Sucheta Nadkarni (University of Cambridge) and Zeki Simsek (Clemson University). For more information regarding the consortium or to express an interest in participating, please contact Sucheta (s.nadkarni@jbs.cam.ac.uk) or Zeki (ZSIMSEK@clemson.edu).
