    STR Irwin Outstanding Educator Award

The Irwin Outstanding Educator Award recognizes a strategy scholar demonstrating a long-term commitment to and expertise in educating strategy students. Nominees have a minimum of 15 years of service since graduating from their doctoral program. When the annual conference is held during a calendar year ending in an odd number, the division evaluates nominees with respect to their contributions to Ph.D. and doctoral education. In years when the annual conference is held during a calendar year that ends in an even number, the division evaluates nominees with respect to their contributions to MBA and executive education in strategic management.

Margarethe F. Wiersema receives the 2022 STR Division Irwin Outstanding Educator Award!

Professor Margarethe F. Wiersema is the recipient of the 2022 STR Irwin Outstanding Educator Award. Margarethe holds the Dean's Professorship in Strategic Management at The Paul Merage School of Business, University of California, Irvine. She has an MBA and Ph.D. from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.

The recipient of numerous awards for excellence in research and teaching, Professor Wiersema was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Copenhagen Business School in 2016 in recognition of a remarkable contribution to research dissemination and education. She was elected as a Strategic Management Society Fellow in 2012 for making significant contributions to the theory and practice of strategic management. She is an International Fellow for the Advanced Institute of Management Research in the UK.  She has received numerous teaching awards for the Executive MBA and Health Care Executive MBA program at UCI. She has served on the faculty at the Business Schools at the University of Michigan, Rice University (where she held the Fayez Sarofim Vanguard Professorship in Management), and as a visiting scholar at London Business School and Copenhagen Business School.

In conveying this award, the STR Division Awards Committee recognized indicators of the rigor and success of Margarethe's classes, the breadth of outlets through which her research and teaching activities have been distributed (including the Economist, the Financial Times, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post) and the careful statements of support offered by administrators and students at her home institution.

A sample of the testimonials offered on her behalf signal the impact that Professor Wiersema has had on students, colleagues, and the field. For instance, a recent executive MBA student in Professor Wiersema's class commented, "I didn't fully understand it at first, but her early course was preparing us to get the most out of the entire program. Coming full circle and having her in Strategy in our second to last quarter, really solidified the excellence this program provided me." A colleague highlighted Professor Wiersema's pivotal role in revising the overall curriculum at her school to match the needs of a modern, more digital world. And a member of the STR committee highlighted her contributions to the field by statingProfessor Wiersema's research has high practical relevance that she deftly translates in impactful and meaningful ways for her students."

The STR Division congratulates Margarethe F. Wiersema on being selected as the 2022 Irwin Outstanding Educator Award. We will be celebrating Margarethe's many contributions to the dissemination of strategic management content at the STR Career Awards session at the Academy of Management Meeting in Seattle.
