MESSAGE FROM THE STR DIVISION CHAIR

    Samina Karim, STR Division Chair

    Northeastern University (samina@northeastern.edu)

A wise person (a.k.a. my father) used to tell me that people’s best qualities emerge in times of crisis. My father lived through a war in Bangladesh so he would know. The past few months have been my first experience of a global crisis, both with the COVID-19 pandemic and then the racism and injustice that has surfaced around us. During this time, what has been important to me has been checking in on friends and colleagues, retaining a sense of community both at home and at work, and reaching out to those who may find it difficult to stay connected.

I won’t lie; I’ve complained to my family before about travel to conferences: packing and unpacking, the time lost in transit, jet lag, interrupted teaching and research, the usual stuff. But this past Spring and Summer, without our usual conferences, I realized that I missed my colleagues and everything that came with them. I missed our friendship, our nerdy academic banter, our advice sessions, our whining sessions, our joint inquisitiveness, our scholarship, and more. In other words, I missed my professional community. It was definitely time to do something.

In March, almost at the same time that COVID-19 brought the world to a stand-still, the STR Leadership Team (LT) meeting was scheduled to take place. With only a week’s warning, we altered our plans from 21 of us meeting in Boston to having our first ever virtual 2-day LT Meeting. During that meeting we brainstormed what we could do to support our members. Even after the LT meeting ended, I continued to receive emails from LT members with innovative ideas. Together, we kicked it into high gear and within 2 weeks we launched our first “STRonger Together” initiative! Special thanks to Paolo Aversa, Aseem Kaul, and Jiao Luo for going above and beyond the call of duty; without them these initiatives simply would not have been feasible.

My experiences since April have reiterated my belief in what my father said.  Though we are all juggling so much – caring for children at home while teaching courses online, dealing with sickness ourselves or with loved ones, hoping not to run out of groceries or toilet paper, trying to stay mentally healthy and happy – I saw our STR community pull together and give, give, give. At the very end of my message you will see a complete table with all of the STRonger Together initiatives that we have held since April and plan to hold through the beginning of August up to the launch of the AOM Annual Conference. What is striking is the hundreds of names of colleagues who gave their time, energy, and enthusiasm to keep our community together and active. To all of you who volunteered I give my heartfelt thanks.

What’s more, I believe that being forced to go virtual has helped us grow our community to be one that is more far reaching than ever before. These past few months showcase how we were able to continue STR’s mission of inclusivity; we reached members all over the world through our STRonger Together initiatives (in table below) and built numerous new connections between our members!  And all of it without taxing our environment, losing transit time, or having to change out of our pajama bottoms.  On the social front we had Café Zoom Conversations for our members to discuss working from home strategies, to bring PhD students and regional communities together to discuss their specific challenges, and to network and be inclusive of languages other than English through Cultural Conversations. On the research front we hosted Networkshops for doctoral students on the market to receive in-depth feedback on papers in virtual roundtables, held one-on-one Coffee Wish Conversations between junior faculty and senior scholars, and had phenomenal turnout at our virtual symposia. In July, we’ll host “Meet the Scholar” sessions each weekday where we interview distinguished scholars in our field and have interactive Q&A with STR members. In addition, we’ll run several Virtual Professional Development Workshops that cannot take place during the Annual Conference dates. Throughout this time, we added to our online teaching resources and had some good laughs with our fun STR Photo Booth (it’s not too late – check out our homepage).

    The Annual Conference

I won’t repeat details here about the AOM Annual Conference; you will find complete information in the messages of our Program Chair, Heather Berry, and also our Assistant Program Chair, Michael Leiblein, which are included in the newsletter. Let me, instead, encourage you to attend our Plenary Session on Monday morning; it will be a fireside-style conversation, “Focusing on COVID’s Implications for the Field of Strategic Management,” with a group of distinguished scholars that includes Alfonso Gambardella (Bocconi), Gerry George (Singapore Management U), Costas Markides (London Business School), Anita McGahan (U of Toronto), Phanish Puranam (INSEAD) and Richard Whittington (U of Oxford). Also, please join us at our Business Meeting on Tuesday morning when we announce and celebrate our award winners including, for the first time, winners of Track Paper Awards. We will also host several virtual Socials and I hope to see/meet you there.

Many thanks go to Program Chair, Heather Berry, and Assistant Program Chair, Michael Leiblein, for creating not one, but two programs this year. Heather and Michael developed programs for the physical conference and then had to completely redo and reorganize offerings for the virtual conference. Thank you, both, for all your work!

    Continuing Initiatives:  Outreach & Inclusivity

Even prior to the pandemic, the STR team was continuing our efforts around outreach and inclusivity. I want to give a shout-out to my predecessors who worked to make STR a truly global membership and one that is welcoming to all our colleagues. Brian Silverman was the Division Chair who saw us through the transition from being the Business Policy & Strategy Division to a more contemporary Strategic Management Division. What many people don’t know is that Brian made significant efforts to bring STR to regions outside of North America and Europe; along with serving in several doctoral workshops, he participated in the Strategic Management in Latin America Conference in São Paulo, and twice with the Africa Academy of Management (along with our Secretary, Michael Holmes) in Cairo and Lagos. Mary Benner had the vision and set the foundation for a Membership Engagement Committee (MEC) that would bring our community together through meaningful and fun events outside of the Annual Conference program. Xavier Martin was the Division Chair to lead the first MEC and its efforts last year in Boston, and also responsible for urging AOM to give Divisions the ability to use funds beyond the Annual Conference to support global outreach.

New Initiative #1:  Workshop Outside of the Annual Conference & North America

Due to the initiatives started by Brian, Mary and Xavier, this past year STR applied for and was awarded a $10K grant from the newly created AOM Strategic Project Fund to launch our first multi-day research workshop outside of the annual conference. Thanks to Michael Leatherbee, our Global Representative for South America, the workshop was to be hosted at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, in Santiago, Chile. Due to the pandemic we have postponed the April 2020 event to next year.

New Initiatives #2 & #3:  STRonger Together Virtual Programs & STR YouTube Channel

In April, as a response to the pandemic, we launched our STRonger Together initiatives to keep our community together and active. Through these initiatives we experimented with different formats of how to best serve our members, and increase both value and reach. Most of us found that virtual breakout rooms for “roundtable” discussions worked seamlessly. Matching junior and senior scholars for one-on-one conversations were more meaningful because there were no interruptions – it’s difficult to get that at a conference! By hosting Cultural Conversations online, members from around the world made new connections that they otherwise may not have made since we don’t always ask a colleague where they grew up or what other languages they speak. Our virtual symposia on Zoom benefitted from the Chat feed and an abundance of questions and feedback for authors. These are a but a few of the many benefits we noticed from our virtual programming and the STR team plans to experiment with these formats in the future. One huge upside to the STRonger Together initiatives’ virtual programming is the ability to record and save these memorable sessions. Our Communications Director extraordinaire, Paolo Aversa, has launched our very own STR YouTube Channel that will serve as a repository for many of our STRonger Together content and future programming. I hope that these new initiatives provide greater impact to our members beyond the annual conference; this has been a key objective of our leadership for several years now.

New Initiative #4:  Representation in Academy Journals

One of my personal goals as Division Chair has been to represent STR members’ concerns regarding review process and representation of scholarship in Academy journals. We began a discussion with the AOM Board to ensure more equitable representation for Strategic Management topics in the journals, given our position as the second largest division of Academy. At the suggestion of the AOM Publications Committee we started a dialog with the team at AMJ; AMJ leadership asked all Divisions to review their keywords for the journal. The STR Leadership Team and several Past Division Chairs gave input and feedback on our STR portion of keywords; we also aligned these suggestions with data on paper submission topics to our annual conference. STR suggested a new list of 49 keywords (compared to prior 31 – this is still reasonable given that OB has 65), and suggested additional updates to the Research Methods and Theoretical Perspectives category keywords as well. We thank the AMJ leadership for being receptive to our input and look forward to seeing changes in the journal's keywords through our continuing dialogue.

    Thank You

Being part of the STR team these past four years has been a huge learning experience. Though we teach and research Strategic Management, it has been a chance for me to practice it – especially this year. Wherever possible, I tried to push for transparency as well as engagement of the entire LT when making decisions that are setting precedents for the future. What the membership does not see are the many committee structures, delegation of responsibilities, codification of procedures, discussions before voting, and more that together make STR function smoothly. Thanks to all of our team members who have played a role – those on the Awards Committee, Global Representatives Committee, Membership Engagement Committee, Teaching Committee and Research Committee. Each member has made valuable contributions to our community both towards the annual conference and our STRonger Together initiatives.

My special thanks to our Leadership Team. This includes our 12 elected Executive Committee members, Paolo Aversa–our Communications Director, Paul Drnevich–our Treasurer, Michael Holmes–our Secretary, and Bilgehan Uzunca–our MEC Coordinator. Together with the officers, these colleagues came together behind the scenes to get so much done! I was, and continue to be, humbled by the dedication and commitment of the LT that I have been fortunate to work with this past year.

To the other officers, Tim Folta–our Division Chair Elect, Heather Berry–our Program Chair, and Michael Leiblein–our Assistant Program Chair, I want to thank you for making this journey a collaborative endeavor as we steered the STR ship (what I like to refer to as the STR Trek Enterprise). Your input was invaluable and I learned a lot from each of you.

Last but not least, I would like to thank Xavier Martin, our Past Division Chair, for his five years of service as an officer of the division. Xavier, you have provided sage advice, recounted important institutional memory, and improved all of our processes throughout the years. To all of you who are reading this message, please do thank Xavier by email for his efforts!

I look forward to seeing many of you at our July STRonger Together initiatives (see below) and at our virtual Annual Conference in August. It has been a privilege to serve as your Division Chair. Stay STRong!

    With gratitude,

    -Samina

Meet The Scholar sessions offer the opportunity for our community to get to know a prominent Strategic Management scholar through a candid conversation. Sessions will begin with an interview by moderators asking scholars a wide range of questions, including: where did they grow up, what made them pursue a career in academia, how have their research interests evolved, what were some challenges and triumphs along the way, what advice would they give to new scholars, what unanswered questions do they think we should pursue, who is their favorite author, and more! Each interview will be followed by discussion and Q&A between session participants and our guest scholar. Our goal is to build our community, share wisdom, be inspired, have some good laughs, and get to know our colleagues a little better. Distinguished scholars and registration links are below.
