We're thrilled to announce the call for applications for our upcoming Professional Development Workshop (PDW) on Research in Emerging Markets: Theoretical and Methodological Frontiers at the Academy of Management annual meeting in Chicago.

This PDW aims to catalyse cutting-edge research in strategic management, with a focus on emerging and frontier markets and other underexplored institutional settings. The objective is to engage scholars in discussions that examine unexplored questions and encourage rigorous testing of existing theories in strategy, as well as the formulation of new theories that emerge from these unique contexts.

Emerging and frontier markets-accounting for nearly 50% of global GDP and two-thirds of global growth over the past decade-pose unique challenges and opportunities for strategic management research. Emerging markets are marked by different forms and levels of institutional development (Dorobantu, Kaul, and Zelner 2017; Khanna and Palepu 1999, 2010; Marquis and Raynard, 2015).They possess strong informal mechanisms that influence firm performance (Adbi, Lee and Singh 2023; Ahuja and Yayavaram, 2011; Mair and Marti 2009; Uzo and Mair 2014), intermediaries that shape entrepreneurship (Assenova 2020; Dutt et al. 2016; Eesley et al. 2018; Foo, Vissa, and Wu 2020), and non-market actors that drive corporate responsibility (Distelhorst and McGahan 2022). Through this PDW, we aspire to build on this momentum and strengthen the scholarly community dedicated to expanding the scope of strategic management research to such understudied markets and institutional contexts.

In the first part of the PDW, invited panellists will present research showcasing theoretical advances and novel data and methodologies in these contexts. This will be followed by an audience-led Q&A session. Part 1 is open to all conference attendees.

The second part of the PDW will consist of small interactive roundtables, with the discussants serving as roundtable chairs. Participants will have the opportunity to receive feedback on their proposals. If you are interested in receiving feedback on a project, please submit a proposal of your research project via this form: https://upenn.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0Dl2DpT6w130psG by June 30, 2024. The proposal should be no longer than 5 pages including references, figures and tables, if any. Attendance for the second part is limited to the discussants, panellists and the selected presenters. We will confirm your participation by July 10, 2024.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Chicago in August!

Please contact aapa@wharton.upenn.edu or sukti.ghosh@insead.edu for any questions.
