    2024 STR Distinguished Scholar Award

The STR Distinguished Scholar Award recognizes an individual who has developed a set of ideas that fundamentally advanced research and understanding in the field of strategic management. While these ideas may involve specific theoretical or empirical discoveries, priority is given to the discovery's importance to the field rather than the accumulation of disparate facts or findings. The intent is to recognize contributions that altered the development of the field.

The 2024 STR Distinguished Scholar Award recognizes David J. Teece!

David J. Teece is Professor of the Graduate School at the University of California, Berkeley. He has also held teaching and research positions at Stanford University and Oxford University. Professor Teece has a PhD and MA from the University of Pennsylvania and MComm and BA degrees from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.

Professor Teece is perhaps best known for his pioneering work on dynamic capabilities, coauthoring one of the most cited papers in business and economics (over 53,000 citations till date, per Google Scholar) on that topic. In addition, he has made seminal contributions to our understanding of business models, value appropriation (notably through his "profiting from innovation" framework), and corporate and multinational strategies. His scholarship has not only had a profound impact on strategic management, but also on related fields including industrial economics and international business, and on policy making in many domains (notably antitrust). He has authored over thirty books and two hundred scholarly papers and has been cited over 210,000 times (per Google Scholar). Professor Teece is a recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including the Herbert Simon Award, the Best Paper Prize of the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of International Business Eminent Scholar Award, and was elected Fellow of the Academy of International Business and Fellow of the Strategic Management Society. He has been recognized by Royal Honors and received honorary doctorates from eight universities across North America, Europe, and Asia.

Professor Teece has also built important institutions for the field of strategic management, including co-editing the Palgrave Encyclopedia on Strategic Management and co-founding the journal Industrial and Corporate Change. He also co-founded the Consortium on Competitiveness and Cooperation (CCC), whose annual doctoral workshop continues to this day. In addition, he has been a significant entrepreneur and business leader, having co-founded (among other ventures) Berkeley Research Group (BRG), the Law and Economics Consulting Group (LECG), and Pilatus Capital. BRG currently has more than forty offices and over 1,200 employees worldwide, and provides expert services and consulting in domains ranging from higher education to corporate finance. Professor Teece is also a widely sought-after expert witness and has testified in both federal and state court, before Congress, and before the Federal Trade Commission, as well as in several international jurisdictions. He has also been a board appointed advisor to the CEO of one of the world's largest technology companies.

In conveying this award, the STR Division Awards Committee noted that in addition to his groundbreaking work on dynamic capabilities and their role in sustained competitive advantage, Professor Teece has made remarkable contributions in multiple areas, including the theory of the firm and how firms organize and create value, especially in the multinational context and in uncertain environments. He has been a pioneer in the study of value creation and appropriation by innovative firms, and his research straddles across a range of levels from within-firm knowledge transfer to the foundations of firm and national competitiveness. Furthermore, he has revisited his seminal contributions over the years, repeatedly deepening his thoughts and opening new boundaries for future generations of scholars. In summary, the committee highlighted that Professor Teece has been an exceptional engine of progress for the field of strategic management.

The STR Division congratulates David Teece on being selected as the 2024 STR Distinguished Scholar Award, and thanks him for his many seminal contributions to the field of strategic management. We hope that you will join us at the Academy of Management Meeting in Chicago to celebrate Professor Teece!
