    Step ONE is a moderated PDW created to support early-stage sustainability PhD students to begin and bolster their journey with the Organizations and the Natural Environment (ONE) Division. This PDW is a precursor for the ONE Doctoral Consortium and geared towards first-time attendees or pre-dissertation PhD students. The objectives of the PDW are to:

    1. Cultivate a passion and purpose for sustainability research, particularly through encouraging participation in a welcoming research community;
    2. Guide PhD students in navigating, participating in, and thriving at AOM, and as part of ONE; and
    3. Develop students’ interests in ONE-related topics, by helping them articulate their research purpose in sustainability, as well as to identify potential theoretical lenses, collaborators, and pathways that will help to engender and amplify that purpose.

    This PDW also includes keynote presentations from ONE Division Chair, Ivan Montiel (Associate Professor, Baruch College) and the ONE Division’s Best Dissertation Award Winner (2021), Katrin Heucher (Postdoctoral Research Fellow, University of Michigan Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise). Ivan and Katrin will be sharing insights, lessons, and best practices into their PhD journeys, and offer steps forward to meaningfully connect with, learn from, contribute to, and thrive within the ONE community.

    The 2021 PDW will be facilitated by two recent graduates and three later-stage doctoral students with various sustainability research streams: Lucrezia Nava (Research Associate, Cambridge Judge Business School); Kevin Chuah (PhD Candidate, London Business School; incoming Assistant Professor, Northeastern University); Sara Graves (PhD Candidate, Simon Fraser University); Anja Grüll (PhD Candidate, WU Vienna); and Ash Ganzoury (PhD Candidate, University of Colorado Boulder).

    Because in-person attendance is based on a first-come first-served basis, we strongly encourage interested participants to register here by Monday, July 8, 2022. To accommodate as many PhD students as possible, we would really appreciate it if prospective participants could kindly specify whether they plan to attend AOM in person or virtually. Likewise, please also specify if you would like to apply for the fee waiver; to note, the fee waiver covers the registration fee, albeit not the required membership fee, and cannot be guaranteed.

    Shortly after registering, participants will be emailed and invited to submit two slides: (1) a picture representing what motivates or best represents their key research interest(s) and (2) an academic article relevant to their research idea. The ideas and articles will be used to form breakout groups for meeting with potential collaborators and to cultivate informal literature reviews.

    The ONE division has generously agreed to sponsor the registration fee of some new ONE members facing financial restrictions at their home institution. Indicate in your application if you would like to request a registration fee waiver (priority will be given to first time attendees and to PhD students based outside North America and Europe).
