Is anyone aware of any data sources that disclose R&D investment and firm size of private firms in the U.S.pharmaceutical industry ? Thank you in advance.

    Hi Victor

You can try specialized databases like MedTrack, RECAP or Bioscan. If you do not have subscription to these specialized databases, you can also try more comprehensive databases like Mergent Online and Mint Global (offered by BvDEP as a front-end to databases like OSRIS). If you are interested only in Pharma-biotech types that are venture capital-backed, you can try the NVCA database in the Securities Data Company (SDC) database

Before you are fully committed to a particular setting or sample, think through iteratively about the data available to you and the research questions you are trying to answer. Have fun!

ReCap has some of this information, though only sketchy (recap.com),
though you need a subscription to get in (it is a relatively cheap
subscription, so someone at UBC or SFU may have one).

IMS is the major source, but its data is really expensive.

    Dear Victor,

You could try biotech and related sector professional associations for country based data.

    regards and good luck

    Jay,

Will is absolutely right, IMS is the only company with a good National coverage of pharma companies. As I used to be an analyst in this industry and worked a lot with IMS, I can suggest a few tips on how to reduce the cost of the data:
    1) Try looking for their syndicated reports, rather than runs on their databases. Their reports can give you what you need, but would cost you a fraction of the cost of a full market download;
    2) If you still ask for a run on their database, ask them to exclude the most recent data point(s): the older data is always cheaper with them; If you ask them to exclude last month's sales, you would save a lot.
    3) When talking to them, make sure they understand that this is for academic research. They can give a more foavorable pricing.

As an alternative to IMS, try also Datamonitor. They have a large healthcare practice and do a lot of reports on pharma industry. Their data, however is mostly drawn from public company reports (as far as I know).

VeriSpan might be another option: they have retail pharmacy and hospital data, as IMS does, but with inferior coverage.

If you are interested in Canadian data, talk also to Brogan Inc., a local competitor of IMS.

    Good luck with your project!

    Alex

Biocentury is a good data source; it does not have financial data; but has others
