  • 1.  Recommendations for textbook / readings for service industries

    Dear BPS members:

    I am looking for recommendations for textbooks, cases, readings,
    syllabi for a Masters level class in Strategic Management
    specifically for service industries like hospitality,
    tourism.... The students are pursuing a M.S. degree in Hospitality
    and Tourism Management and this class forms part of the required
    core. Students come from all disciplines and may not have had an
    undergraduate strategy capstone class.

    I have used "Four Seasons Goes to Paris" (HBS case) for my international management class (both grad and undergrad), but  I believe this case can also be used in a strategy class with the kind of settings you mentioned.

    I have a case on Banyan Tree Resorts & Hotels. It was developed for teaching classes on international strategy formulation and implementation (including entry mode, global-local responsiveness, and corporate social responsibility), international management, and global brand management.

     

    It's called "Banyan Tree Resorts & Hotels: Building an international brand from an Asian base" published by INSEAD, Singapore.

    It is also reprinted as a textbook case in J. Johansson, Global Marketing: Foreign entry, local marketing, and global management (4th ed.). Irwin/McGraw Hill Inc.

     

    You can take a look at it and see if it's suitable for your course.
