Are you a case writer? Are you attending the 2010 Academy of Management meetings in Montréal? Do you have an interest in using your cases to develop theory, but need some help? Then this Professional Development Workshop (PDW #: 290) sponsored by the Research Methods Division, scheduled on Saturday, Aug 7 2010 12:30PM - 3:00PM at Delta Centre-Ville in Bonsecours is for you.
In recent years, interest in case-based research has grown as the need to explain phenomena that does not fit the 'normal distribution' of the more traditional popular statistical research methods. Be it Siggelkow's (2006) call to document 'talking pigs' or McKelvey's (2006) call to look at the non-normal distributions with long tails, case-based methods seem to be the answer to studying these phenomena. Have you been writing case-studies, only to use them for teaching, and want to find ways to take this work to the next level of research? Do you have interest in theoretical ideas and believe that cases document 'reality' that is not captured in our traditional theoretical frameworks? This workshop is for you and we welcome you to submit your case, instructors' manual, a statement describing potential areas for theory development. You may also attend as an observer, but the goal is to get active case writers interested in theory development to converge and help each other.
The workshop session will be held in a round-table format wherein PDW organizers and participants will engage in informal discussions and work with each other in a collaborative environment fostering constructive exchange of ideas. The goal is to nurture case authors to move towards theory development. It will be a working session for authors who have well developed cases ready, that they wish to use for theory development. If you'd like to actively participate in this Theory Building PDW, please submit your case and a summary statement.
