The National University of Ireland Galway seeks to appoint a dynamic, ambitious Head of School for the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics, one of three Schools in the College of Business, Public Policy, and Law. The appointed person will also be appointed as Established Professor in the School. We seek to appoint a forward-looking, innovative and highly committed person who combines strong academic and research credentials with a proven track record of leadership and change management.
The successful candidate will have strong academic credibility along with successful experience of building a research culture and taking on leadership roles in a Business School. The ability to integrate research and teaching, and demonstrable experience of close collaborative working with other academics and professionals, along with well-developed strategic leadership skills are all essential for this post.
The appointed person will drive forward priorities for research and teaching excellence, provide visionary leadership and assist in the further development of a culture of high performance within the School. They will be expected to make a major contribution to developing the external profile of the School and to growing market share, particularly at postgraduate level.
About the School
The J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics is home to circa 60 staff and 2100 students, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and comprises five disciplines: Management, Marketing, Accountancy & Finance, Business Information Systems, and Economics. The School offers a portfolio of teaching programmes, from undergraduate degrees to distinctive postgraduate programmes (MSc, MBA and PhD) that are enriched and informed by extensive support from industry partners, and is a core member of two research institutes, the Whitaker Institute for Innovation and Societal Change and the Institute for Lifecourse and Society.
Amongst the key goals of the School over the next 5 years are to become:
- the national leader and internationally recognised in business management in regional industry clusters (ICT and/or Medical Technologies clusters) providing new postgraduate and executive education programmes in strategy and leadership, regional development, and international management
- the national leader and internationally recognised in the economics of public policy including health economics, international macroeconomics, and natural resource economics and policy
- the national leader and internationally recognised in public-sector innovation and reform
The School aims to build on its existing AMBA and EPAS accreditations to attain school-level accreditation. The School aims to further enhance its innovative collaborations with the private and public sectors, as well as to significantly expand postgraduate taught provision.
The Head of School is responsible for academic leadership and plays a crucial role in developing and enhancing the teaching and research programmes within the School and in promoting excellence among staff and students. He/She will provide leadership and vision to set ambitious stretch targets for the School and will create new interdisciplinary opportunities both within and between Schools.
The Head of School will:
- Provide leadership and direction to the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics, and advance the School's strengths and reputation;
- Develop and deliver the mission of the J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics;
- Foster collaboration in teaching and research within the School, College and University, regionally, nationally and internationally;
- Ensure that internationalisation is at the core of the School's activities, particularly in terms of postgraduate student recruitment;
- Ensure the professional accreditation of degrees with bodies such as AMBA and EPAS is maintained and that school-level accreditation is achieved;
- Create and drive engagement with external bodies in the private and public sectors, including businesses and other stakeholders in the Galway region and beyond.
The successful applicant will have:
- A strong track record in strategic leadership and in developing a high performance culture.
- An international reputation for scholarship within a relevant discipline, to complement the existing strengths within the School;
- A demonstrated capacity to manage people and resources and have the interpersonal skills to progress the development of an established team of staff within which there currently exists a strong collegiate bond and a shared commitment to excellence in research and teaching.
