Invitation to Participate
Reviewing (for) Discoveries PDW -- AOM 2017
Sponsored by Academy of Management Discoveries
Friday, August 4 from 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM – Hyatt Courtland Room
Overview: This PDW aims to familiarize participants with the evaluation of phenomena-driven and abduction-based research. In addition to presenting the basics of constructive reviewing common to all Academy journals, AMD's new senior editorial team will also provide insight into what makes Academy of Management Discoveries (AMD) unique, and what goes into writing a high quality AMD review.
PDW Structure: This PDW consists of two parts:
· 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM -- open to all without the need for pre-registration: Panellists will discuss: (1) the unique nature of AMD and type of research it seeks to publish, (2) the logical and empirical demands of abductive reasoning, and (3) how AMD's policy of "retaining the author's voice" is reflected in the feedback AMD provides to authors.
· 3:45 PM to 5:15 PM -- open to pre-registered participants only: Participants will be divided into small groups (each led by an AMD Associate Editor) and systematically evaluate two papers actually submitted to AMD.
Panelists: Peter Bamberger, Marlys Christianson, Paul Ingram, Jennifer Muller, Sandra Robinson, Junqi Shi, Chris Tucci, Gail Whiteman, and others...
Key Benefits: (1) Gain key insights into evaluating scholarly manuscripts and writing constructive reviews; (2) Learn from the reviewer's perspective what makes for a publishable manuscript; (3) Participation in both parts of the PDW enables the participant to become an ad-hoc reviewer for AMD and may speed an invitation to join AMD's editorial review board.
Who Can Register? Anyone interested in learning more about phenomenon-driven research can register, especially: (1) doctoral students seeking to better understand what reviewing is all about and what reviewers look for in a manuscript; and (2) junior faculty looking to hon their reviewing skills and gain entry onto the editorial review board of a major journal. All registrants will be sent two papers (along with AMD reviewer guidelines) to "review" at least two weeks before the AOM meeting. Registrants will be expected to be familiar with the manuscript prior to the start of the PDW.
Do I need to be a faculty member to register or attend? No! The PDW is open to all meeting participants – students, junior faculty, and veteran scholars alike -- who wish to strengthen and develop their reviewing competencies and/or start reviewing for AMD. However, only those pre-registered will be able to participate in the second, hands-on, part of the PDW.
