Innovation is it at the heart of value creation and often essential for superior firm performance. Organizational design offers a major lever that managers can pull in order to ensure the effective implementation of their strategies. Designing organizations in ways that enable innovation activities should represent a key managerial priority. Yet despite its importance, limited scholastic attention has been paid to understanding the relationship between firms' design choices and their innovation outcomes. Recent studies have started to examine this issue using a variety of methods including the use of large archival datasets and laboratory experiments. This nascent research domain is starting to provide some intriguing findings, however many important research questions remain unanswered. This PDW aims to provide scholars with an overview of the latest research examining the relationship between organizational design and innovation, a structured opportunity to develop new research ideas, and an opportunity to network with scholars that have similar research interests.
The PDW is divided into two parts. In the first part, a panel of four leading scholars whose research spans a broad domain within the organizational design and innovation space present their perspectives on the latest work on the topic as well as their thoughts on future research opportunities. This part of the PDW is open to everyone and no need to sign-up in advance.
In the second part of the PDW, the 4 presenters will lead discussion groups to provide feedback on paper ideas relating to organizational design and innovation. To participate in this part of the PDW, a research idea must be submitted in advance and further sign-up is required. Those research ideas selected will be allocated to an appropriate discussion table with other scholars investigating similar issues.
