Building Better Theory with Formal Models (It's All Greek to Me)

    Panelist: Ron Adner, Dartmouth College
    Panelist: Carliss Baldwin, Harvard U.
    Panelist: Tobias Kretschmer, LMU Munich
Panelist: Hart E. Posen, U. of Wisconsin, Madison
Panelist: Brian Wu, U. of Michigan

Organizer: Douglas Hannah, The U. of Texas at Austin
    Organizer: Feng Zhu, Harvard U.

Formal, closed-form, mathematical models are a powerful tool for developing theory, but their role in the strategy and organizations literature remains limited. This symposium assembles a panel of expert modelers, multi-method researchers, and journal editors to examine when and how formal modeling can be used to develop theory. Through a facilitated discussion, this expert panel will explore the role of formal modeling in theory development and its potential complementarity with other methods, the characteristics and best practices of stronger models, and what we as individuals and a community can do to improve the quality and impact of the method. This symposium will provide valuable insights for both modeling practitioners as well as anyone who reads formal modeling research (or wants to).

The program will be structured to allow substantial time for audience participation and engagement with the panelists, so please come with questions!
