Professional Development Workshop: Call for Participants
Recent Approaches to Creating & Analyzing Big Data: Opportunities and Challenges for Researchers
Strategic Management (STR) Division
Saturday, August 11th, 2018
8.00 am – 11.00am, Swissôtel Chicago, Zurich C
Are you curious about how machine learning may influence research in STR and TIM? Do you have an idea that may benefit from scraping data from the Internet? Does your research involve a lot of text and language processing, and are you looking for ways to automate such processing?
If you answered YES to any of these questions, this PDW is for you!
This PDW will focus on acquainting empirical researchers with three technological advances related to Big Data--- web scraping, natural language processing and machine learning---that are likely to be relevant and useful to empirical researchers in these fields over the next several years. The workshop has two overall objectives: provide interested empirical researchers with a brief look at some applications of these advances in research studies, and engender a broader discussion around the relevance and impact of these advances to research not only in STR, but also in TIM and ENT. To achieve these objectives, the workshop design incorporates a well-balanced mix of panelist presentations along two dimensions-a mix of junior, mid-level and senior scholars who will share practical and strategic perspectives, and a diversity of research topics and disciplinary lenses being examined through these techniques. The participant-centered discussion format will also maximize learning and dialogue with panelists.
Organizers: Rajshree Agarwal (University of Maryland) and Natarajan Balasubramanian (Syracuse University)
Panelists: Christian Catalini (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Justin Frake (University of Maryland), Anand Gopal (University of Maryland), Brad Greenwood (University of Minnesota), Olav Sorenson (Yale University)
Time and location: Saturday, August 11th, 2018; 8.00 am – 11.00am, Swissôtel Chicago, Room: Zurich C.
