Empowering Words: Achieving High Quality Writing in Management and Organizational Studies
Program Session #: 651 | Submission: 10745 | Sponsor(s): (AAT)
Scheduled: Sunday, Aug 3 2014 2:30PM - 4:30PM at Pennsylvania Convention Center in Room 120B
Writing is a fundamental aspect of academic research and a challenging one at that. In recent years, organizational scholars have observed that much writing in our field is limited or problematic in certain respects and also voiced suggestions for improving the quality of our writing. Building on this discussion and capitalizing on the theme of this year's conference – the power of words – we focus this workshop on the nature of writing in management and organizational studies. Specifically, we consider not only what constitutes effective writing but also how reviewers, editors, and educators can foster such writing by adopting specific prescriptions and templates. We devote attention to topics and tensions associated with writing quantitative vs. qualitative papers, scientific vs. artistic communication in academic writing, writing together vs. writing alone, linear vs. non-linear writing, and writing vs. "non-writing" time. We also discuss effective writing-related practices and processes concerning storytelling, perspective taking (thinking about your reader), accessibility (writing for a larger audience), navigating role transitions (e.g., from researcher to author to writer), and finding joy in writing. This workshop brings together several leading scholars who have published observations on this very theme. Many of these scholars have served as associate editors at leading journals. The proposed structure for this workshop is intended to stimulate a productive conversation around the foundations of high quality writing and the forces that shape how we write.
