What: The 2014 edition of the Irwin Outstanding Educator Award recognizes excellence in MBA and Executive Education.
Who: This year's recipient is Myles Shaver (University of Minnesota).
It is with great pride that BPS congratulates Professor Myles Shaver and the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota on his selection as the 2014 Irwin Outstanding Educator. Myles is a Professor of Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship and the Pond Family Chair in the Teaching and Advancement of Free Enterprise Principles at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. His educational background includes a Ph.D. in International Business from the University of Michigan and a B. Comm. from the University of Alberta. Prior to joining Minnesota in 2001, Myles served on the faculty of New York University's Stern School of Business, was a Distinguished Visitor at the National University of Singapore Business School, and was a Visiting Scholar at the Copenhagen Business School.
He has received numerous teaching awards for MBA and executive education classes, including the Carlson Executive MBA Award for Teaching Excellence, Outstanding Elective Faculty of the Year, Outstanding Non-core Faculty Member, Outstanding Faculty Dedication Award, and the Carlson School of Management Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Outstanding Overall Faculty award. His MBA teaching includes courses in Corporate Strategy, Corporate Responsibility, Industry and Competitive Analysis, Multinational Business Management, and Business Strategy and Policy. His Executive education courses include MBA Essentials, Minnesota Management Institute, Minnesota Executive program, Corporate Strategy for Functional Executives, How Your Business Adds Value, The Logic of Strategy, Management Essentials for the High Potential Executive, and custom programs for various clients.
In support of this award, one of his deans wrote "Myles is my gold standard for business school professors. He provides a depth and clarity of thought in the classroom that is unmatched... [and has] an ability to create engagement with students that brings the classroom experience to life. All the while being fully engaged in the problems managers face – helping them apply academic frameworks to tackle their biggest challenges and take advantage of their biggest opportunities".
Myles' research interests revolve around corporate strategy choices and their impact on performance. In particular, his research focuses on the management and economics of international expansion as well as corporate expansion through diversification and mergers and acquisitions. Myles' work has been published in several leading academic publications and he has presented his research at numerous universities and conferences around the world. Myles is an Associate Editor of the Global Strategy Journal and Management Science and is on the Editorial Boards of the Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Strategic Organization, and the Journal of International Business Education.
Myles makes frequent media appearances to discuss business topics and was awarded the Ross School of Business (University of Michigan) Distinguished Ph.D. Alumni Award in 2010. Poets and Quants included Myles in their profile of the "World's 50 Best Business School Professors."
