We invite attendees to register for the AOM PDW entitled "Multilevel
Theoretical Challenges in Strategic Management Research: A Focus on
Emergence". The PDW will take place on Saturday, Aug 2 2014 between
10:15AM - 12:15PM at Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown Hotel in
Philadelphia South.
Strategic management theories operate at one organizational level of
analysis or another; however, we lack clear theoretical explanations
for multi- and cross-level phenomena. Exploring the processes and
mechanisms for how our theories move from individuals to groups, and
from groups to larger groups, can be beneficial to strategy scholars.
Related advances have been made in multilevel theory and in
scholarship on microfoundations in recent years; yet there are
pressing challenges to advancing multilevel research in strategic
management, particularly when it comes to understanding and applying
the concept of emergence. Emergence is defined as occurring when
cognitive, behavioral, and affective characteristics of individuals
amount to a higher level collective construct through social
interactions over time (Kozlowski & Klein, 2000). The purpose of this
PDW is to provide strategy scholars with an improved understanding of
multilevel theoretical challenges, with a focus on the concept of
emergence.
