  • 1.  Looking for examples of redeploying a resource or capability to sell a very different product or service

    Dear colleagues:  

    I am teaching a MBA course on business model transformation.  I am looking to upgrade my examples of how an existing firm found creative ways to redevelop existing resourses and/or capabilities to sell a product/service that quite different from the existing product offering. 

    Can you share good examples that you are aware of?

    Hi Peter:

    Though not quite a response to the specific examples you are seeking, the following examples could be useful for your course on business model transformation:

    1. In 2005, Vineet Nayar, CEO of HCL Technologies, adopted a completely new and counter-intuitive business model, "Employees First, Customers Second", which has produced great results for the company. For more details, see Vineet Nayar's book with the same title (HBSP, 2010), and you can also find many resources, including articles and YouTube videos, on this theme at google.com.

    2. Another IT services company, iGate.com, has increasingly adopted an outcome-based pricing model, compared to the fixed-price and time & materials pricing models used in the IT services industry. You can find case studies at igate.com.
