The purpose of the school is to introduce participants to foundations of theory and methods of social network analysis (SNA), and to demonstrate how networks are used to explain and predict phenomena in a wide range of other applied disciplines. The school contains three independent, but interconnected components: theoretical, methodological, and applied. It is ideal for students and faculty who have never worked with network theory and methods, but would like to start using SNA in their research.
The main goal of the school is to teach participants the fundamentals of the integrated systems thinking approach in order to create theoretically driven, methodologically sound research projects. The ultimate outcome of the school is the completed project proposal for a study, which can later be completed as a full-scale research project. Participants will also receive three ECTS credits for their participation in the course. The working language of the school is English.
Researchers and students who have never worked with network analysis before, but are interested in utilizing this method in their respective areas of study, are invited to apply. School is taught by Stanley Wasserman (Indiana University), scientific supervisor, NRU HSE International laboratory for applied network research (http://anr.hse.ru/en/) and laboratory lead scientists (in the areas of management, sociology, project management, etc.)
Applications
Application deadline is June 1, 2014. To apply, please send an email to anr@hse.ru, describing why you are interested in the network analysis. Also, please indicate your area of academic interest, where you want to apply the SNA. Please attach your CV and any other materials you find relevant (such as abstracts of working papers), so that we can better tailor your individual reading list to your academic interests.
Fees and scholarships
The course fee is 750 euros (Faculty of Management is offering a limited number of scholarships on a first-come basis), and includes instruction, all materials (including individually customized reading packets based on participants' interest), accommodations, and all meals except dinner.

Together with NRU HSE Sociology of Education and Science Lab, we invite advanced students and young researchers to the school "Networks in Academia, Science and Technology," St. Petersburg, August 8-13, 2014. Application deadline: May 25, 2014.
This school is a logical continuation of the first, and is designed for advanced applicants with background in social, behavioral, and science studies, as well as those interested in learning about advanced methods of network analysis. The working language is English.
The school offers two separate tracks. The tracks run in parallel, so only one track can be chosen. Attendance is limited to 20 participants in each track.
Track 1. Methodology for network analysis (Intermediate / Advanced level). This is a workshop designed for people more interested in learning methodology than theory (we assume that you have a basic knowledge of network theory). It assumes a familiarity with matrix algebra and statistics. The course will include both lectures and hands-on computer laboratory exercises, and is taught by Stanley Wasserman (Indiana University), scientific supervisor, NRU HSE International laboratory for applied network research (http://anr.hse.ru/en/) and laboratory lead scientists.
Track 2. Networks in Academia, Science and Technology. The course will focus on collection and analysis of scholarly activity data; modeling structure and dynamics of communities; science mapping; collaboration in science and technology; flows of communication in the scientific system. It will also review and compare the available software packages that are widely used to analyze large-scale networks, and specifically bibliometric and scientometric data. The course is taught by Alireza Abbasi (University of New South Wales, Canberra, Australia); Nees Jan van Eck (Centre for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden University), developer of VOSviewer and CitNetExplore; and Benjamin Lind (Higher School of Economics, Moscow, Russia) (lab practice: R packages for SNA).
