    Dear BPS members,

We would like to invite you to the following PDW, which is open to anyone. In the first part, we discuss the current state of the art in research on the intersection between sustainability and firm growth from our perspective. In the second part, we want to facilitate discussion to identify promising research designs to help participants that are interested in doing research on these topics. If you plan to attend the entire PDW it would be helpful if you
register, please send (a) your name, (b) a short Bio, and (c) a brief description of your research interest to Peter Snoeren (p.m.snoeren@tilburguniversity.eduby July 28th, 2017. This will help us to manage the roundtable discussions.

The Sustainability of Firm's Growth: Integrating Corporate and Stakeholder Strategies PDW

    Academy of Management, Atlanta, USA
    Saturday August 5th 2017  (2.15pm - 4.45 pm)

    Panelists
Emanuele L. M. Bettinazzi, EMLYON Business School (FR)
Joseph M. Mahoney, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (US)
Kerstin Neumann, University of Innsbruck (AT)
    Peter Snoeren, Tilburg University (NL)
    Maurizio Zollo, Bocconi University, (IT)

    Description
The objective of this PDW is to offer the opportunity to engage in a collective discussion on theoretical, empirical and managerial challenges related to the sustainability of firm growth. The theoretical agenda we propose can be viewed as the possible integration of corporate strategies related to the speed and the modes of growth with stakeholder strategy choices related to the degree of involvement of multiple classes of stakeholders in strategic decision-making processes.

The discussion will be stimulated by bringing together two important observations. On the one hand, there is evidence of evolutionary trends towards increasing levels of stakeholder-orientation by firms across industries and geographies, with positive long-term performance implications. On the other hand, however, there is little theoretical and empirical research on whether and how such trends influence the economic, social and environmental sustainability of corporate development initiatives.

The PDW will take place both in plenary and small group settings. Panelists will share their perspectives building on their specific field of expertise, and elaborate on lessons learned for the sake of future research efforts. Then, table facilitators will coordinate participants' discussions on the development of a research design aimed at tackling research questions related to this overarching theoretical gap at the intersection of corporate strategy and stakeholder strategy.

    Format
The PDW consists of two highly interactive sessions, which complement each other.

    ·         FIRST PART (Open, No registration required): the speakers will share their thoughts in their respective knowledge domains. This will be done in a debate, rather than presentation format, moderated by the organizers, aimed at unearthing both the theoretical insight and the ways in which they have been trying to tackle the empirical challenges of this type of research. There will be also several opportunities for the audience to engage with the speakers during the flow of the debate.

    ·         SECOND PART (Registration required): Small group discussions (roundtables, each chaired by one panelists) on specific research questions, bridging corporate and stakeholder strategy. The objective is to have a hands-on experience of learning, in which participants will discuss and develop a research design on the linkage between these highly interdependent, but mostly separately treated research domains.
