Researchers have identified several alternative ways to collaborate with managers to generate knowledge, including action research, insider-outsider research, and engaged scholarship. Such collaborative methods aim to impact practice through research; however, these methods remain on the fringes of scholarship. Researchers have difficulty knowing how to do this work and publishing their outputs. In this PDW, we invite researchers and editors to discuss: (1) the challenges and opportunities in innovative research designs with academics and practitioners as knowledge partners, (2) the rigor and relevance in such research methods, and (3) publishing such research in the top journals in our field, including the role that editors play. In the end, the PDW participants will take away tips and advice on designing such research, as well navigating the publication process. We also hope to start a broader conversation around the relevance of our current publishing and reviewing process for such collaborative methods.
