Call for Participants: AMR Writing Workshop with the Outgoing Editors:

    Writing Theoretical Papers

    Program Session #: 43 | Submission: 17082 | Sponsor(s): (AAA)

Scheduled: Friday, Aug 12 2011 9:00AM - 11:30AM at Hilton Palacio del Rio in Corte Real

    Overview:

The purpose of this workshop is to help participants develop the craft of theory building.  The organizers, Jean-Philippe Bonardi, Adelaide W. King, Dave Lepak and Gerardo Okhuysen, are outgoing Associate Editors for the Academy of Management Review.  We invite individuals who would benefit from a structured inquiry to facilitate their efforts to craft new theoretical insights in ways that will lead to publication in AMR or other leading scholarly outlets.  While completion of a PhD is required, this workshop is targeted to scholars of all management disciplines and across early, mid, and seasoned career stages. The focus of the PDW is on advancing a current research topic that participants are already working on, and we also hope to help participants identify and generate new ideas and topics of inquiry.

This professional development workshop will be run as an interactive session, and is limited to 32 participants. Our approach is to organize the PDW into different paths of theory building to support efforts by a wide range of scholars to structure theories and develop their craft of theory-building. The thematic organization of the session will be the four suggestions the Academy of Management Review mission statement offers for fruitful areas for theory building. Although these are clearly not independent paths, they are distinct enough to structure rich discussions. To focus the workshop for participants, each organizer will take one of these areas to lead a discussion on this path to theory building.  Participants will be asked to come with a theoretical idea that fits with mission of AMR, and with questions and problems associated with this idea.  These will then be discussed (and ideally, solutions will emerge.)

    Session Structure:

The PDW is organized in two main segments. During the first segment (introduction and overview), each organizer will present a short description of one of the four paths for theory building. After this overview, the participants will break out into the four discussion tables, each led by one of the organizers. In this part of the session, each organizer will lead a short discussion of exemplar research for the theme at his or her table. The conversation at each table will then move to the concerns, questions, and interests of the participants in the workshop.

9:00-9:45             Introductions and brief overview of four forms of theory development overview

    9:45-11:15             Round table workshop sessions

11:15-11:30             Wrap up and suggestions for future PDWs

    Participation

    1.     The workshop is limited to 32 participants. Completion of a PhD is required.

    2.     Participants register by July 14th by sending an email to lepak@smlr.rutgers.edu with the following information.

    a.     Name

    b.     Title and Organization

    c.     Year PhD granted:

    d.     A single paragraph description of research interest.

    e.     Provide a rank order of themes based on your topics of interest.

                                                   i.     Topic 1: Develop new management and organization theory

ii.     Topic 2: Significantly challenge or clarify existing theory

iii.     Topic 3: Synthesize recent advances and ideas into fresh, if not entirely new theory

iv.     Topic 4: Initiate a search for new theory by identifying and delineating a novel theoretical problem

    3.     By July 25th, organizers will assign tables based on interest areas and ranked preference, striving to ensure that individual interests are accommodated and that discussion tables are balanced.  Once tables are confirmed, participants will receive assigned pre-reading, exemplars of theoretical contribution for each of the four themes in the form of papers published in AMR over the years.

    4.     By August 5th, participants will be asked to submit a ½ page summary of a theoretical idea for the themes they will participate in to share with others ahead of time to facilitate discussion.
