Good Colleagues of the BPS Division:

We would like to invite you to a special caucus at the Academy of Management Conference this year.

Title:  People and Organizations Research Interest Group

    Time:  Tuesday, Aug 12 2008 4:10PM - 5:20PM

Location:  Academy of Management Conference, 2008 | Hilton Anaheim in Ventura

Coordinating Participants:  Diane Burton, Ben Campbell, Peter Cappelli, Russ Coff, Tim Gardner, Tom Kochan, Shad Morris, Scott Snell

Topic:  Scholars have recently engaged in vigorous debate over the changing nature of relationships between people and organizations.  We would like to create a forum where scholars interested in these relationships – a field we broadly describe as "macro human resource management" – can come together to discuss their interests in developing novel research on this topic. We are particularly interested in convening scholars whose work does not naturally fit in the HR Division because it sits outside the dominant paradigm of I/O Psychology. While many of the scholars whom we hope to include may have a home in either the OMT, IM or BPS divisions, we believe there is an unmet need to bring together those members of the academy who are primarily interested in work-related topics. Targeted research areas include Social and Human Capital, Managerial Capabilities, Labor Markets, Public Policies Governing Employment Relations, and Talent-Driven Organizations. The caucus will consist of round tables organized by thematic topics of interest. A primary topic of discussion will be the relevant theories from sociology, political science, industrial relations, and economics that may improve the theoretical foundations of macro-HR research. The purpose of this gathering is to improve the quality of emerging scholarly work. We therefore envision a mix of junior and senior scholars at each round table. However, a secondary goal of this gathering is to build a network of the macro-HR junior scholars. The caucus will provide an opportunity for this community to share knowledge about publishing outlets, conferences, and research opportunities.

We will also discuss plans for a Human Capital Conference in summer of 2009.

We hope you will participate in this developmental and networking event.

    Sincerely,

    Diane Burton

    Ben Campbell

    Tim Gardner
