New annual conference series on "Institutional Mechanisms for Self
Regulation"
Conference dates: February 24-25, 2006
Call for papers deadline: November 18, 2005
This conference seeks to convene scholars researching mechanisms for
solving common industry problems. Examples include codes of conduct,
standards, industry norms, collaborative agreements, information disclosure
standards, and ratings organizations. These programs govern a wide array of
domains including environmental management, worker and product safety,
technological compatibility, fiduciary responsibility, advertising,
broadcast media, privacy, and digital rights and other forms of
intellectual property.
The first conference will be held Friday and Saturday, February 24-25, 2006
at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. This first year will emphasize
self-regulation that purports to solve environmental problems such as
pollution and overuse of common resources, although papers that address
self-regulation in other domains are also very welcome.
Papers might address barriers to self-regulation, the conditions under
which self-regulation is feasible, public policies that may foster self-
regulation, institutional mechanisms that may facilitate collective action
among firms, and the appropriate roles for government. Other topics might
include (but are not limited to) the role of industry organizations, the
diffusion of new institutional norms, or the structure of alliances between
corporations and government or stakeholders.
Submissions: We welcome papers from a wide range of disciplines including
business strategy, economics, law, and public policy. Submissions should
be original research papers that have not yet been accepted for
publication. Working papers that include preliminary analysis are also
acceptable. Please submit proposals by November 18, 2005 to Michael Toffel,
Haas School of Business, University of California at Berkeley via e-mail
toffel@haas.berkeley.edu
