    Design-Driven Innovation

    Program Session #: 249 | Submission: 13812 | Sponsor(s): (TIM, BPS, OM)
    Scheduled: Saturday, Aug 8 2009 12:10PM - 4:10PM at Hyatt Regency <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Chicago</st1:city></st1:place> in McCormick

    PDW organizers:

Celine Abecassis-Moedas (Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Lisbon, Portugal),

Sihem Ben Mahmoud-Jouini (HEC, Paris, France)

    Delphine Manceau (ESCP-EAP, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Paris</st1:city>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">France</st1:country-region></st1:place>)

From a tactical role, design had shifted to a strategic role in the value creation targeted by the firms. From a downstream step in the development process, design is more and more a driver in product and service innovation. However, we know little of how design actually channels towards tangible results and how this design-driven innovation might be managed effectively especially compared to technology-driven and market pull-innovation. The PDW aims at being interactive and we plan rich discussions on the following three topics: (1) Design-driven vs. technological-based and market-pull innovations. Design in service innovation? (2) The role of design firms/agencies in the development process? (3) Teaching design in the business schools

Design-driven vs. technological-based and market-pull innovations. Design in service innovation?

Positioning design within theories of management of innovation: a research agenda. Roberto Verganti (Politecnico di Milano)

The role of design firms/agencies in the development process?

An entrepreneurial model of design firms. Celine Abecassis-Moedas (Universidade Católica Portuguesa), Sihem Ben Mahmoud Jouini (HEC) and Delphine Manceau (ESCP-Europe)

Conditions of success and failure in collaborations between business firms and design consultancies: The designers' perspective. Davide Ravasi (<st1:placename w:st="on">Bocconi</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype>) and Ileana Stigliani (<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Imperial</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">College</st1:placetype></st1:place>)
