The BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop will be offered as a pre-convention activity at the 2006 Academy Meeting in <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:place></st1:city>. The workshop is open to all strategy-oriented doctoral students at any stage of the dissertation process. Students just beginning to think about dissertation issues as well as those who have completed their dissertation proposal are encouraged to attend. The workshop is scheduled for Sunday, August 13, 2006, 8:30 a.m.-12 noon. Pre-registration is required.
The workshop will be conducted in an informal setting where students will be able to interact with faculty coordinators and guests in small groups. Finalists from last year's BPS Outstanding Dissertation Award share the coordination of the workshop. These finalists are: Saikat Chaudhuri (Wharton), Gary Dushnitsky (Wharton), Sarah Kaplan (Wharton), Jon O'Brien (Notre Dame) and Jasjit Singh (INSEAD). In addition, senior faculty Kathy Eisenhardt (Stanford), Tim Folta (Purdue) and Scott Stern (Kellogg) will discuss their perspective on outstanding dissertation research based on their years of advising students.
Please encourage doctoral students to participate in the workshop. The variety of topics discussed will have relevance to students just beginning the dissertation process and those moving into the final stages. Small group discussion will allow interaction of people at similar stages. Topics to be covered include: a) considerations on selecting a topic and defining a question, b) preparing and defending the proposal, c) forming and managing a committee, d) considerations on research design, e) practical and technical issues associated with data collection, f) seeking a job and preparing the job talk, g) writing and defending the dissertation, h) carving up the dissertation into papers for publication, and i) some special considerations for qualitative research in strategy.
Doctoral students interested in the workshop should pre-register no later than July 28, 2006 at the following site:
