    The "big picture" strategy questions...

    - Where does competitive advantage come from,
    and how is it sustained?

    - Why do some existing firms and new ventures
    consistently outperform their competitors?

    - Why do some businesses succeed in the same
    industry environments where others fail?

    - And what, if anything, can managers and
    entrepreneurs actually do about it?

    -------------------------------------------------------

The aim of this annual conference series is to
improve our ability to answer these "big picture"
questions and other related questions by engaging
some of the world's top researchers on competitive
advantage in Atlanta for 3 days a year.

    We expect to:

    - Share cutting-edge research, ideas, and theories.

    - Foster collaborative research efforts.

    - Build a worldwide association and network of
researchers who are dedicated to advancing the
state of knowledge about competitive advantage.

    -------------------------------------------------------

The conference organizers invite the submission
of unpublished working papers that advance the
state of knowledge about competitive advantage...

    - Conference registration fee will be WAIVED for
all authors of papers selected for
    presentation at the conference.

    - Submitted papers will undergo a selection
process, not a formal review process, so
    reviews will not be provided.

    - The DEADLINE for submissions is Friday
    January 27, 2006.

    -------------------------------------------------------

    NEW FEATURE FOR 2006...

THREE "RESEARCH-TO-PRACTICE" SPECIAL TOPIC FORUMS ON:
    - RECOGNIZING COMPANIES WITH DISTINCTIVE ADVANTAGES
    - RECOGNIZING DISTINCTIVE ADVANTAGES WITHIN COMPANIES
    - IMPACT OF STRATEGIC ALLIANCES ON COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

    Research-To-Practice Special Topic Forums feature
presentations by both researchers & practitioners
who share common interests, in order to foster
exchanges of ideas, methods, & opportunities.

We especially encourage submission of original
    research on these 3 topics:

1.) RECOGNIZING COMPANIES WITH DISTINCTIVE ADVANTAGES:
Above all others, "value investors" are
especially interested in distinctive advantage, as
Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Warren Buffett once
explained,"The key to investing is not assessing how
much an industry is going to affect society, or how
much it will grow, but rather determining the
competitive advantage of any given company and, above
all, the durability of that advantage. The products
or services that have wide, sustainable moats around
them are the ones that deliver rewards to investors."
Although strategy researchers have learned much about
how companies build and sustain competitive advantage,
they have developed few practical tools or metrics to
help investors identify and recognize such companies
at an early enough stage for them to profit. We seek
original research that makes any steps, no matter how
small, toward the development of such tools or metrics.

2.) RECOGNIZING DISTINCTIVE ADVANTAGES WITHIN COMPANIES:
Where do successful new strategies come from?
How do companies discover or recognize their own
distinctive advantages? How does this cognitive
process work in managers & entrepreneurs?
What role is played by personality, experience,
    experimentation, knowledge, learning, biases,
    mental models, social networks?

    3.) IMPACT OF STRATEGIC ALLIANCES
    ON COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE:
When do alliances help, and when do they hurt?
What types of alliances & partners are more
advantageous? How can processes & structures
for managing alliances affect their performance?

Please indicate on the cover page of your paper if
you think it might be relevant for any of these
    three Research-To-Practice Special Topic Forums.
