    Hello!

We are pleased to announce that the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University will be hosting the 8th Annual Strategy and the Business Environment Conference and the 3rd Annual Institutions for Industry Self-Regulation Conference concurrently in Durham, NC on February 29th and March 1st, 2008. This marks the first time that these two conferences will be held at the same time and location.

The objective of the joint conference is to explore the interrelationships between the business strategies of firms and the social, legal, and political environment or environments in which they operate. The conference will include scholars researching mechanisms and strategies for solving industry problems. Potential topics include but are not limited to corporate lobbying, codes of conduct, standards, industry norms, collaborative agreements, information disclosure standards, and ratings organizations. These institutions and strategies are applicable across a wide array of domains including worker and product safety, technological compatibility, fiduciary responsibility, environmental management, advertising, broadcast media, privacy, and digital rights and other forms of intellectual property. We hope that the joint conference will support the development of a community of scholars for whom the business environment and strategy represent an important part of their research and teaching.

We are receptive to a wide range of research perspectives and methodologies including theoretical modeling, quantitative research drawing upon historical or archival data, surveys, or publicly available data, and qualitative research involving in-depth case studies or comparative research. We welcome papers from a wide range of disciplines including but not limited to business strategy, economics, sociology, law, public policy, international business, and political science. We are particularly interested in papers that have clear first-order implications for general management and policy rather than solely for the structure of the business environment.

Please submit papers for consideration in the conference program by December 8, 2006. The program will be announced by January 15, 2007. Submissions should be original research papers that have not yet been accepted for publication. Working papers that include preliminary analysis are also acceptable.

The conference coordinator is Michael Lenox at Duke. The conference committee also includes Daniel Diermeier at Northwestern and Witold Henisz at Wharton.  The conference website is http://faculty.fuqua.duke.edu/~mlenox/SBE_ISR_Conference/sbe_isr_conference.html.

We look forward to your submissions!

    Take care,

    Michael
