Vacancy at the University of Amsterdam Business School, The Netherlands
PhD position in strategy and economics
full time
job reference number 07-5026
open to both internal and external candidates
The aim of this project is to investigate the link between strategy and
performance. In addition to assessing purely financial measures of a firm’s
position and performance, investors are increasingly interested in assessing
firms on the basis of their strategic positions. This research project
intends to contribute to bridging the gap between academic research into the
causes of differential firm performance and the day-to-day practice of
analysts assessing the competitive positions of firms. Economic theory and
previous research in finance, strategy and industrial organization point to
three aspects of a firm’s strategic position that should be correlated with
firm performance. These are the degree of unrelated diversification, which
has been found to be negatively correlated to performance, and market
dominance and relative efficiency, which have been found to be positively
correlated to performance. This research project will study (1) these
relationships, (2) the interactions between them, and (3) the way in which
they are, and can be, used to assess investment opportunities in firms. The
core of the research will consist of quantitative studies of firm
performance, complemented by one or more detailed case studies of the
interactions between the different causes of differential firm performance
over time.
