  • 1.  Question about Strategy Text

    Posted 06-24-2007 09:44

    Dear colleagues,

This fall I am taking over and reworking our MPA program's Strategic Management class, and was wondering if anyone knew of a good text for teaching strategy to public and nonprofit managers. We generally get a few students employed in private-sector health care, but otherwise everyone is employed in city / county government or the nonprofit sector. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Best regards,

    Greg

My school likes the capsim game which includes an electric textbook.
In this game, students compete against each other with virtual
companies. Search "capsim" if you are interested.

    Hi Greg,

At the risk of promoting my own work, you may like to have a look at my strategy textbook with an emerging market focus, available for only $15 including shipping direct from India.  It is a comprehensive textbook, now in its second edition and is quite popular in India, and is intended for an MBA audience.   It has, among other things, a chapter on public and nonprofit enterprise strategy, and you will find it useful as a standalone text, if you are including supplement articles; or as a supplement text that has several innovative features not usually found in the contemporary strategy texts.  You may order it at the following site:

    About the text:

This innovative work on business policy and strategic management,

covering both the illustrative cases and conceptual foundation, offers

authoritative approaches to strategic leadership in emerging markets.

Among its many unique features, this comprehensively updated and revised

second edition is structured to help students think strategically.

The major organizational issues in strategy development are covered

    through an analytical study of:

Nine different perspectives on organization to capture the rich history of

the discipline and enlighten the nature of strategy.

9-M model to analyze strategies in functional areas of manpower,

materials, methods, money, manufacturing, machine, marketing,

    motivating, and manipulating.

Competitive gaming model to strategize different types of market structures.

Internetworking model to develop high-performance Internet ventures.

Strategic business model to unfold hidden value into new directions.

Value model to explain strategic elements of innovation and technology

    management.

Strategic leadership model relevant to the emerging market ground realities.

Strategic control model (both balanced and extended scorecard) to

explore the influence of environmental and cultural contexts on effective

    performance.

The text is well supported by more than one thousand sources of

international research, India-focused case studies and experiential

assignments. This comprehensive text on theory and practice of strategic

management is a must read for management students as well as business

    practitioners and consultants.

I assume you have seen John Bryson's text "Strategic planning for nonprofits" or something like that.  I've used it supplemented with more mainstream material and HBR articles for an MPA class, and the students liked it.
