  • 1.  Backgrounds of Venture Founders

    Hi all,

I am interested in researching the effects of parent firms that spawn entrepreneurial ventures on the subsequent performance of the ventures. For this purpose, I need to construct an employment history of the founding members of ventures founded durng a particular time period and in a particular industry. I am inclined towards studying the biotech industry during 1993-2003 (approx.) but could focus on another industry (or even multiple industries) if data considerations warrant doing so. Could anyone suggest databases that provide data on founding teams of ventures in any particular industry and the previous employment of the founders. Alternatively, information on databases that track executive migration within a particular industry will also be appreciated as that could partially address my issues as well.

    Thanks for any information.

    Sandip,

I asked a similar question to the ENTrepreneurship Division mail list last year (good venue for questions like yours). The bottom line: there's a crucial lack of good venture information, especially when it comes to the demographics of venture teams. By definition, "under the radar" teams are ... difficult to capture ;-)

A summary of the response received appears below. Thanks to let us know what you find on your side J

    Best, and good luck,

***** Result of quick survey on ENT mail list regarding sources on entrepreneurial teams and performance*****

Panel Study on Entrepreneurial Dynamics: very good panel data on team composition, used for instance by Ruef, Aldrich and Carter (2003), designed by and for researchers. But, it was not developed originally towards  performance/outcome per startup. Since it is a survey, difficult to complement by matching to other public sources. There was hints (as of summer 2006) that performance was to be incorporated in the future.

IPO filings: such data are rather rich given the management info in the S1 Filings. If one is interested in nascent firms, it implies a strong selection on the dependent variable bias (only firms reaching IPO appear).

Such kinds of filings are incorporated in various commercial databases such as ...

VentureXpert-SDC/VentureOne (thanks to Ben [hallen@stanford.edu]): good financial data, but information limited to names and (in the case of VentureOne) dates.

CapitaIQ: good financial data, but team demographic information is very limited, and only current value (no historical). Basically, age is indicated sometimes, and more details may be available when a full text self provided bio is available.

CorpTech (thanks Erik Monsen [monsen@econ.mpg.de]): good financial data, but executive data is limited to name, title, function.

See D&B's Million-Dollar database (sugg by Boris Nenide [bnenide@fintel.us]), to be linked to Kauffman Financial Data

Wharton's WRDS contains at least two database with interesting exec info: compustat executive, and IRRC for directors (pretty good!)

Since many of the above tools are rather weak  on the demographics, it could be completed (MANUALLY!) through tools like www.zoominfo.com and www.archive.org

Various people a few private data collections. Most prominently, the SPEC (Stanford), which is not public data, is a collective effort to gather longitudinal data on startups over 10 years, w/ both performance and demographic.

Other possible sources: check DATABASES FOR THE STUDY OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP, J.A. Katz,
