Colleagues,
During the past four decades the pressure to publish has increased
dramatically at business schools in the United States. This pressure, no
doubt, influences how faculty experience different aspects of their work.
Yet, the effects of the "publish-or-perish" phenomenon on business school
faculty have never been empirically investigated in a comprehensive
research study.
Alan Miller (University of Nevada, Las Vegas) and Art Bedeian (Louisiana
State University) will soon survey a national sample of management faculty
to understand how the pressure to publish affects their research
productivity, research choices, teaching effectiveness, job satisfaction,
motivation, level of stress, and integrity.
The results of this research may have profound implications for future
research requirements in US business schools as well as for the promotion
and tenure process. If you receive an invitation to participate in this
study, please take the short time needed to complete the study's survey
instrument. Your responses may have a significant impact on our profession.
With sincere thanks,
Alan N. Miller, Ph.D.
