Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, has been a renowned cultural, scientific and commercial center for many centuries. It was here, in 1880, that VU University first opened its doors to students. VU University (www.vu.nl) aims to be inspiring, innovative and involved. It now comprises twelve faculties and has teaching facilities for 18,000 students. The university campus and university hospital are situated in the south-western part of Amsterdam, one of the most dynamic and fast-growing business districts in the Netherlands. The international airport of Schiphol-Amsterdam is just 8 minutes away by train. Both research and teaching of VU University are of a high quality.
The Department of Public Administration and Organization Sciences
The Department of Public Administration and Organization Sciences houses two research programs (Strategizing for Opportunities and Dynamics of Governance) and organizes a bachelor program in Public Administration and Organization Science and a master program in Policy, Communication and Organization. Furthermore, it contributes to the faculty's Research Master. Currently, the Department has around twenty five faculty members and ten PhD students. The Department has been very successful in enrolling students in new programs. From this solid base the challenge for the coming years is to achieve high quality in both research and teaching.
The Candidate
The Department of Public Administration and Organization Sciences seeks to further strengthen its position. Therefore we are looking for a candidate with a PhD in the social or management sciences and who is enthusiastic about contributing to the ambitious goals of the Department. Especially, we are looking for a candidate who is committed to excellence in strategy related research and teaching. This must be demonstrable from the candidate's past performance, such as an international research profile including a track record of high level international journal publications in the domain of strategy, organization science or related areas, and good teaching evaluations.
Given the specialization areas within the department and the character of the educational programs, we favor a candidate who is interested in empirical research, making use of institutional organization theory, entrepreneurship theory or other relevant theories like those on decision making and social networks. Experience with a variety of research methods, i.e. quantitative and qualitative, or mixed methods will be welcomed. Because of the character of the department, applicants should have an interest in coaching junior faculty members and stimulating PhD students, attention to joint research projects will be required.
The candidate must be able and willing to play an important role in external fund raising. Administrative tasks are part of the profile and management experience is preferred. Candidates should have good communication skills. Candidates should acquire working knowledge of the Dutch language after two years.
Conditions
The appointment will be a tenure position, with a trial period of one year.
