    We hope that you can join us at the Academy of Management Annual Conference for the following PDW:

     

    "Passion and Compassion in Public and Non Profit Strategic Planning:  Getting Stakeholders into Strategy"

    This PDW will provide an opportunity to discuss and critically reflect on the issue of stakeholder frameworks and their applicability to public and non-profit organizations. It will also consider stakeholder involvement in the strategic planning process – especially in public and non-profit organizations.  The presenters will base their material on their work experience, consulting expertise and research.  Together they will approach the stakeholder issue from several angles including that of the practitioner, researcher, teacher, and academic.  Through the workshop's format the presenters will seek to interactively explore with participants how each role - practitioner, researcher, teacher, and academic - can contribute to the creation of effective strategy research and how each can contribute to the translation and dissemination of strategy research into strategy practice.  The panelists include the following:

    Graham Kenny (Strategic Factors).  Graham is Founder of the company Strategic Factors and led the development of the Strategic Factor System. He has undertaken industry research and analysis, strategy development and performance measurement for a wide range of organisations in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. For the last 20 years he has also conducted public seminars in strategic planning and performance measurement. They are the only public seminars on these topics that have been run continuously over this period in Australia and both are regarded as industry leaders. Graham has also been a Professor of Management at San Diego State University in the US, the University of Alberta and the University of New Brunswick in Canada. He has published more than 50 articles and three books. Those articles aimed at practicing managers have appeared in the Company Director, Leadership Excellence, Management, Management Today, Marketing, National Accountant, Commodities & Trade to Asia, HR Monthly and Charter. Two of his three books, Strategic Planning and Performance Management and Diversification Strategy have been published internationally in 2005 and 2009 respectively.

    Melanie P. Cohen (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development).  Dr. Melanie P. Cohen has worked at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as the Information Technology Strategist since December 2001. She developed HUD's first Information Technology Strategic Plan in 2003. Her work at HUD has focused on maximizing business and technology integration and the role of information technology in organizational productivity. Prior to joining HUD, she was the Chief of the Strategic Planning Unit at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) responsible for developing the strategic planning process culminating in the DEA's Strategic Plan (FY 2000 – FY 2006). Dr. Cohen is an expert in strategy development in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Her experience includes organizational restructuring, change, and culture. Her research interests focus on public management and the 21st century organization.

     

    Robert Sheehan (University of Maryland).  Dr. Rob Sheehan has more than twenty-five years of executive management experience, including eighteen years as the CEO of two different national nonprofits. His research and academic publications are focused on leadership, strategy, and organizational effectiveness. His background and experiences have included serving as CEO of LeaderShape, Inc. from 1992-2001 and CEO of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity & Educational Foundation from 1981-90. As Academic Director of Executive Programs at the Smith School of Business, Rob directs the academic aspects of Executive MBA programs with responsibility for cohorts in the U.S. (College Park EMBA & Custom MBA for SAIC), China, and Switzerland. He also assists with custom-designed executive education programs for various organizations.

    Geoffery Seaver (National Defense University). Professor Seaver's current research interests include; enterprise strategic planning as a wicked problem, techniques for involving stakeholder in the enterprise strategic planning process, and capability-based planning using whole-world scenarios.  He has extensive experience in all aspects of information resources management, with primary interests in strategic information systems planning and strategic information systems development.  He has more than 30 years of experience of working on developing large, medium, and small scale information systems, with responsibilities for overseeing both in-house-driven system development projects and contractor-driven system development projects.  As a Professor of Systems Management at the Information Resources Management College of the National Defense University, Professor Seaver teaches course modules in a variety of areas including: systems thinking, enterprise strategic planning, complexity, information management planning, information technology capital planning and investment management, information technology performance measurement, systems development for large-scale systems, and information technology.

    Bethany Blakey (U.S. Department of Transportation).  Bethany Blakey earned a Master of Public Administration and a Master of Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh. Her concentrations were Public Management & Policy and Community Organization & Planning respectively. She joined federal service through the Presidential Management Fellows program in 1996 serving with the Drug Enforcement Administration in management analysis, budget planning, and strategic planning. She also worked for Main Justice as planning and measurement liaison to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and for the National Institute of Justice co-leading the Vice President's Task Force on Crime Mapping and Data-Driven Management.  She is currently serving as the performance team lead for the US Department of Transportation. 

     

     

    After a first set of presentations, a 45-min discussion period has been allocated to allow exercises facilitated by the presenters to engage the audience through discussions in round tables.
