Commensurate with the growth in our faculty in Management at the John Molson School of Business (JMSB), we are seeking qualified applicants for our expanded PhD program. We would appreciate if you could pass on the information below to any potentially interested student.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Management
John Molson School of Business (JMSB)
Concordia University
Montreal, Canada
Why get a Ph.D.? If you are interested in an academic career as a researcher and educator, getting a doctoral degree is right for you. The position of a university professor is frequently ranked as one of the most desirable jobs in the world. This is because academia provides both intellectual freedom and the possibility to work with intelligent, creative and highly motivated people throughout your life. You will become a specialist in your field and develop leading-edge research skills. And with these, you can make a real difference through the scholarly research you create, and the lives you shape through your teaching and mentoring. The life style as an academic is good! Frequently, Ph.D. graduates' starting salary range from $100K to $150K, and the job market for a Management Ph.D. is strong. With the current, 'baby-boomer', generation of professors retiring, more positions are available than candidates pursuing jobs.
Why a Ph.D. in Management? Management is a key element in the success of the strategy and business plan of any organization-commercial, non-profit or government-and this importance is increasingly reflected in the academic and research programs of universities in North America and worldwide. Not surprisingly, the Management area at JMSB represents a strong community of active researchers pursuing a wide variety of interests. Ph.D. students in this specialization can prepare for academia and research in the management areas of organizational behavior, human resources management, organizational theory, strategic management, international management, and entrepreneurship and small business management.
Why at JMSB? With its 7,000 graduate and undergraduate students and 35,000+alumni, the John Molson School of Business is one of the best known and most respected institutions of its kind in Canada. JMSB is committed to academic excellence, cutting-edge research and student support. Our 140 full-time faculty members have a diverse and multicultural background and are graduates from prominent universities in Canada and worldwide. Many are world-class experts in their field, with extensive research published in books and academic journals. Many serve as board members of international learned societies or as senior advisors to government and industry. JMSB has nine research chairs and several innovative centers such as the Bell Research Centre for Business Process Innovations, the Centre for Small Business and Entrepreneurial Studies, Institute for Community Entrepreneurship and Development, the InterNeg Research Centre and the Desjardins Centre for Innovation in Business Finance. JMSB is also one of 17 institutions in Canada that is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), a prestigious designation that ensures adherence to rigorous academic standards and that is a reflection of the high quality of research and teaching at JMSB. At JMSB, a unique feature is the 'joint' nature of the Ph.D. program. Although your degree will be a JMSB degree, the program operates in affiliation with three other Montreal universities. This calls for English language competence (French an asset, but not essential), and opens up tremendous opportunities and resources to students in terms of the variety of seminars and specialized topics for research, computer and library facilities, and access to world-renowned researchers and visiting speakers. http://www.johnmolson.concordia.ca/phd/index.cfm
In the area of Management JMSB's primary asset is its course offerings and its faculty members who have expertise and active research interests in a wide range of topics. Our faculty is strongly research oriented and emphasizes early involvement of students through small class sizes, a high-tech research lab, research projects, research assistantships, and individual mentorship. Thus, doctoral students experience significant attention and support by a diverse set of facilities and world-class faculty. For more information, see http://www.johnmolson.concordia.ca/phd/faculty.cfm
Our current and past Ph.D. students in Management are very successful and this is important when it comes to accessing the best positions as university professors. Ph.D. students and professors in the department have published in leading research journals (e.g., Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, International Journal of Cross-Cultural Management, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Management, Personnel Psychology, Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Columbia Journal of World Business, Strategic Planning Management, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Strategy, Journal of International Business Studies and Business Horizons) and their research has been cited for several best paper awards. Current students are presenting research at prestigious conferences in North America and Europe like the Academy of Management, Administrative Sciences Association of Canada, American Psychological Association, Canadian Psychological Association, Academy of International Business, EGOS, Strategic Management Association, International Association for Conflict Management, and International Society for the Study of Work and Organizational Values.
