    Colleagues,

I am looking for an executive-oriented book/text on M&A integration.  One book I have on my shelf, for instance, is Schweiger's M&A Integration (2002) McGraw-Hill (261 pp), but I am sure you have some good alternatives for me.  As part of one of my courses, I would like to put together an intensive two-day class around M&A integration that couples a book that has a good framework for an executive audience with a series of exercises that reinforce the application of the framework.  I have done pieces of this before, but never in longer than 4-hour blocks so any suggestions or examples would be welcome.

Thanks!  I will post responses to the BPSNet.

    Mason,

Haspeslagh and Jemison's (1991) text, Managing Acquisitions: Creating Value Through Corporate Renewal (Free Press) is excellent. It provides insights into all variety of integration issues (pre-, during, and post-integration). Although it does not have exercises, its case examples serve as great discussion vehicles (e.g., what would you have done differently and why?).

    Good luck!
    Don

    Hi Mason,

I have found the following two books to be quite useful for MBA/ EMBA
audiences interested in M&A integration issues. Borghese & Borgese (2002)
is comprehensive, systematic, and practical; Galpin & Herndon (2000) is
very hands-on with a lot of process tools/ templates for merger
    implementation.

    Robert J. Borghese & Paul F. Borgese (2002), M&A from Planning to
Integration. McGraw-Hill/ Association for Financial Professionals.

Timothy J. Galpin & Mark Herndon (2000), The Complete Guide to Mergers &
    Acquisitions. Jossey-Bass.

    Hope this helps,

    Mason,
Let me add to the excellent texts that have already been suggested, at
the risk of being self-serving, one more that I have published a few
weeks back in cooperation with David Fubini and Colin Price, McKinsey's
Post-Merger Management global practice leaders. The title is "Mergers:
Leadership, Performance and Corporate Health", published by Pelgrave.
The novelty of this book lies in the analysis of the role of the
corporate leader, rather than that of the integration manager, in the
post-acquisition phase. Strangely enough, the contribution of corporate
leadership to the success of M&As has not been given much attention so
far, despite the intuitively powerful impact (both positive and
    negative) it can have.
As you can imagine, given the issues at hand and the primary audience
for which it was written (senior executives), the book is very hands on
and full of caselettes and quotes. It is also written in a very direct
and straightforward style, which makes it a valuable source for
executive education (EMBA and above). It is also quite short (160 pages)
but dense with insights and practical advice. Hope it helps!
Best of luck with your teaching endeavors,

    Maurizio Zollo

    Dear Mason,

On top of those that have already been mentioned, I would like to suggest the following text as a potentially useful source for an executive audience:

Hitt, M. A., Harrison, J. S., & Ireland, R. D. 2001. Mergers and acquisitions: A guide to creating value for stakeholders. New York, NY: Oxford University Press.

    The very best,

    Mario
