The program places primary emphasis on the development of research competence and teaching as a vehicle to academic professionalism. We very much hope that there are some prospective applicants at your university, and that you will put them in touch with us. Below are some details about our Ph.D. program. Please do not hesitate to forward this information to anyone who you know is considering a PhD program. Also, please do not hesitate to contact me or Anne Tsui (our Ph.D. coordinator) if you have further questions. Thank you for your help.

The Ph.D. Program in Management at Arizona State University

    Faculty
The Management Department has 20 faculty members who cover the areas of Human Resource Management, Organizational Behavior, Organizational Theory, and Strategic Management. The faculty's research and teaching emphasizes a broad array of topics, such as leadership, teams, stress, coping, job loss, turnover, workplace identity, process and project management, high tech management, performance management systems, diversity, socialization, alliances/joint ventures, corporate governance, diversification, CEO succession, international strategy, corporate political strategies, business ethics, competitive dynamics, and entrepreneurship. Faculty members publish their research in leading journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Management Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, Strategic Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of International Business Studies, Organization Science, and Personnel Psychology. The faculty takes great pride in their numerous local and international awards for research and teaching excellence, including the recent ranking of third place internationally in research performance in top journals.

    Students
All of our Ph.D. students are full-time students, a requirement that we believe is essential for developing skills and values for effective scholarship. Students learn research and teaching skills by serving as apprentices to experienced scholars. Each new student is assigned to two faculty mentors in the first two years of his or her study before embarking on the dissertation.

    Admission
The prerequisites for admission to the Ph.D. program are a minimum of a Bachelor's degree (in any field), though most of our students have a master's degree and several years' of professional work experience, along with competitive GMAT or GRE scores (exceeding the 75th percentile). The Department Ph.D. Committee screens all applications, and conducts phone interviews of the short listed applicants. In the evaluation of candidates, the committee considers the entire profile of the applicant, including test scores, transcripts, experience, the personal statement, letters of recommendation, as well as the fit between faculty research and applicant interests. We admit students only for the Fall term, and we admit two to four students per year. Our admissions procedures conform to the equal opportunity and affirmative action policies of ASU.

    Program Structure
The basic structure of the Ph.D. program includes two years of course work, including core courses that provide the foundations of the management field and elective courses that prepare the student to develop a research area of interest. The specific courses taken represent the student's area of specialization and are selected by the student with the help of a mentor from the Ph.D. program committee. There is a research paper requirement each year until the dissertation stage when the student focuses on his or her dissertation research. The comprehensive exam takes place at the end of the second year, followed by two to three years of dedicated work on the dissertation along with other research projects. Most students complete the degree in five years, though it is possible to complete it in four years.

The dissertation represents a major research project of an original and creative nature that will advance the state of theory in the student's major field. Given the emphasis on research in the program, we strive to ensure that the dissertation is not the student's first research project. However, when the dissertation is completed, it signifies individual competence as a researcher. Each year, our students actively participate in the main conferences such as the Academy of Management or the Strategic Management Society by submitting and presenting their research papers. For example, our doctoral students had a phenomenal 100% success rate for paper submissions for the 2006 Academy of Management meeting. A total of 25 papers were accepted among our current 15 students. Most of our students also have publications in top-level journals by the time they are ready to apply for faculty positions.
