I am looking for one or two articles on aspects of org design/architecture
(i.e., incentives, decision rights, structure, culture, leadership) to be
used in a MBA strategy course. The article(s) will be used to explore how
strategy is implemented and sustained via org design. Please send me your
recommendations and I will summarize for the list. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Corey

Here are 2 articles that I use in one of my strategy courses (based on Robert Grant's text). These articles focus more on org structure.

    Do You Have a Well-Designed Organization?Authors:Goold, Michael
    Campbell, AndrewSource:Harvard Business Review; Mar2002, Vol. 80 Issue 3, p117, 8pDocument Type:ArticleSubject Terms:*CORPORATE governance
    *MANAGEMENT science
*ORGANIZATIONAL changeAbstract:The authors feel that a practical framework to guide executives through the challenges of organizational design has been lacking. Therefore, they reviewed the principles of good design, observed the structures of companies, and examined ways in which executives go about making design decisions. What they came up with were nine tests of organization design. The tests can be used to either evaluate an existing structure or create a new one. The first four are called 'fit' tests: (1) The Market Advantage Test (2) The Parenting Advantage Test (3) The People Test, and (4) The Feasibility Test. The next five are 'good design' tests. (5) The Specialist Cultures Test (6) The Difficult-Links Test (7) The Redundant-Hierarchy Test (8) The Accountability Test, and (9) The Flexibility Test. INSETS: How Parents Create Value; How Units Connect; Getting the Bugs Out.Full Text Word Count:4944ISSN:0017-8012Accession Number:6327095DatabaseBusiness Source Premier

    Why Hierarchies Thrive.Authors:Leavitt, Harold J.Source:Harvard Business Review; Mar2003, Vol. 81 Issue 3, p96-102, 7pDocument Type:ArticleSubject Terms:*MANAGEMENT science
    *ORGANIZATIONAL behavior
    *ORGANIZATIONAL structure
HIERARCHIESAbstract:In this article, organizational behavior expert Harold J. Leavitt presents neither a defense of human hierarchies nor another attack on them. Instead, he offers a reality check, a reminder that hierarchy remains the basic structure of most, if not all, large, ongoing human organizations. Yet the intensity with which we struggle against hierarchies only serves to highlight their durability. Despite the good they may do, hierarchies are inevitably authoritarian. Sensitive leaders take steps to make speaking the truth as painless as possible.Full Text Word Count:3907ISSN:0017-8012Accession Number:9162440DatabaseBusiness Source Premier

There was an HBR article done in the early 90s (an interview with the
CEO of Xerox) that addresses what you are seeking. It was titled "The
    CEO as Organization Architect."
