All Academy PDW: Industrial Symbiosis - Collective Action for Sustainable Material and Energy Use

    Sunday, August 9th, 2:30pm - 5pm, Hyatt Regency Chicago, Grand D North

This All Academy PDW brings together scholars from multiple disciplines including management, operations, and strategy, to define and develop a research agenda around the growing field of Industrial Symbiosis (IS). Industrial Symbiosis is an approach to managing material and energy that involves one firm making productive use of another firm's 'waste' resources. The city of Kalundborg, Denmark, is held up as the world's longest-developed example of IS between multiple entities, but there are many efforts around the world where similar resource exchanges are occurring. Some of these have been developed intentionally while others have emerged organically.

The PDW features a panel of experts who will comment on the current state of research and practice in Industrial Symbiosis:
    *       John Ehrenfeld - International Society for Industrial Ecology
    *       Marian Chertow - Yale University
    *       Joseph Sarkis - Clark University
    *       William Hoffman - Chicago Manufacturing Center

Following panel presentations, PDW participants will engage in roundtable discussion of questions such as:
    *       How do relationships for IS arise outside traditional supply chains?
    *       How can firms and other entities discover and develop the potential of undervalued resources through IS?
    *       What are the practical barriers to IS and how have organizations overcome these?
    *       What role is there for private and public partnerships in IS?
