Kenneth Andrews's little book (only 180 pages) called "The Concept of Corporate Strategy" had a big influence on the development of the strategy field.  Its publisher, Richard D. Irwin, published three editions of it -- 1971, 1980, and 1987.

I am interested in learning about the history of how this book was historically used in teaching at business schools.  Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any information about this anywhere.  So, I am posting this inquiry here on BPS-NET.

If you are aware of any business school where any edition of this little book was EVER assigned as required reading in any course (undergraduate or graduate, core or elective), please e-mail directly to me (at Rich_Makadok@bus.emory.edu) whatever information you may know about it (even incomplete information), such as:
       - At which school or schools was it assigned?
      - During which years?
      - In which courses?
      - By which instructors?

Thanks in advance for whatever information you may be able to provide.

    Best regards,

The Andrews text was originally written for the 1965 Irwin (bought by McGraw Hill) Business Policy: Text and Cases by Learned, Christensen, Andrews and Guth.  That book and subsequent editions – there were 8 – was very widely assigned in the late 60's and 70's.  For that reason, the 1971 "text only" book was less often assigned.  Irwin wanted to sell it as a text to managers.  For the entire intellectual history, see my essay

Bower, Joseph L. "The Teaching of Strategy: From General Manager to Analyst and Back Again?" Journal of Management Inquiry 17, no. 4 (December 2008). (DOI: 10.1177/1056492608318149.)

When Mike Porter was an MBA student, he studied Business Policy under Christensen and learned about corporate strategy from the Andrews chapters and the cases.

    Hi Rich -

The third edition of this book was required reading in the Corporate Strategy PhD seminar at Illinois in 1987.  I suspect that earlier editions were used in prior years and that the 1986 version was used subsequent to 1987, but I don't know for sure.  Irene Duhaime taught that class so she might be able to provide more information.  - Pam

Rich - I assign chapters 1 and 2 of Andrews's book as an introduction to
the "domain of corporate strategy" in my PhD seminar on corporate
strategy. I use the 1987 edition, but only because it is the latest
edition. While these chapters are written in a simple format, students
like them. They provide a good basis for an introductory discussion of
the field. I also assign articles such as Hofer (1975), Bourgeois
(1980), and Bowman & Helfat (2001) to complement the Andrews's chapters
    in this introduction.

    Hello Richard,

Jim Chrisman assigned the 1987 version of Andrews' book (along with Barnard, Selznick, Ansoff, etc.) in his Spring 1992 Ph D seminar, Strategic Management Theory and Research at Louisiana State University.  He is now at Mississippi State University (jchrisman@cobilan.msstate.edu) if you want to follow up with him about his subsequent use of the book.
