    Hi Everyone,

(I am sending this to the BPS and ENTREP lists, sorry for the cross-post)

I am beginning to use Twitter this semester to better connect with my students. I am thinking about using it in the following ways...

    1. Sending links to newspaper stories / web sites / videos that relate to class material and /or my students may find interesting.
    2. Sending out course announcements.
    3. Sending notifications about new content being posted on our class website.
    4. Sending out reminders about assignment due dates.

I am interested in learning about others' experience using Twitter for such purposes and also about other productive ways to use it a tool to serve students better and promote learning in and  between classes.

Lastly, I'd be interested in following others who are using Twitter for similar purposes. Please send your twitter details if you don't mind me following you.

Nice, Eric, though for those purposes I cannot readily see much advantage of Twitter over old fashioned email.

Could you help out building the case for Twitter?

I will add you to my list.  I am DrThomas on Twitter.  One thought on Twitter, due to its nature you will run into trouble if you put anything up that is required and is nonredundant.  Unlike email, tweets are not saved long term, and if you follow several people things can get pushed off your list and you never see them.  Also if you follow many people then information scrolls by so fast that you just don't see some things even if you're sitting right there.  I solve this problem with TweetDeck, a third party ap that splits the twitter stream into categories based on the people I select.  (At least that is what I used to do until I started writing my dissertation whenever I sit at a computer.)  At any rate I look forward to watching your experiment, as I was planning on integrating it into my entrepreneurship classes next year (assuming, as always, that I will get a job).

    Good question Alfredo.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, I am just learning and experimenting with how to use Twitter for the first time this semester. As such, others may be able to answer your question about the merits of Twitter based upon more experience than I. Nevertheless here is some of my thinking behind trying it out this semester.

One advantage that Twitter has over email is that your posts are archived on your Twitter home page. Thus, students (or others) don't need a twitter account to follow your tweets, they just need to check your twitter page periodically. This feature also makes it really easy to retrieve older messages and links as well. The effect is a web page students can easily access containing comments and links to items you referred to throughout the semester. Also, since there are a variety of apps for a variety of platforms,  students have many choices regarding how to follow your tweets.

One potential problem is that many students are not currently using Twitter, but like many other things we ask students to engage in at university, that doesn't mean we shouldn't encourage them to learn about it and how they can use it effectively. In this respect, getting students to become comfortable and use Twitter can help them stay current and follow events and thought leaders in real time. In this way, Twitter can be a useful tool to help students learn and integrate new knowledge and in doing so, may potentially help them make more informed strategic decisions and discover entrepreneurial opportunities.

Thus, email lists are certainly useful and have their place, but Twitter does have some unique potential advantages and applications. Also, compared to other options such as Facebook, Twitter entails fewer privacy concerns for students because they release no personal information to me by following my tweets.

Anybody out there with positive experiences using Twitter want to share?

    Thanks,

    Eric

Applications such as twitter and facebook are open access versions of systems that have been around for years, email, listservers, discussion boards. This is an example of our rather shallow approach as "with it" academics of cut-and-paste teaching and publication. I can add "green" and "sustainable" to the adjectives and adverbs in all my PPT text, publications, textbooks, etc., and suddenly I have a new edition.

    Hi Eric,

Found the following news article that claims that twitter reduces working memory and extensive texting (following tweets?) actually reduces IQ

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/twitter/6147668/Facebook-enhances-intelligence-but-Twitter-diminishes-it-claims-psychologist.html

Will try and track down the actual study report...

Though love the idea of being able to tweet the 'texter' in my class: "Look up at the screen, it's easier to read!"

    Best,

    Sujit
