    Posted 11-17-2009 11:04

    Hello All,

Teach For America is a national nonprofit working to eliminate educational inequity in our country. We are seeking a managing director, design to join staff and design a robust suite of competency-base trainings for our 1,200-person staff. This is a truly innovative project that will deliver ground-breaking results. We feel the ideal candidate for this role will have exceptional strategic thinking skills and likely come from the consulting world and thus I wanted to share this opportunity with all of you.

I have included a profile summary for you below (just to get you thinking about relevant people you may know). I have also provided some external language for you to pass along to your network: a brief intro on Teach For America and our short format job description with a hyperlink to our website and the full job description.

Thanks in advance for your consideration of this opportunity and the request to share this with your networks. Please let me know if you have any great people you think I should speak with. We are really struggling to find this person and greatly appreciate any suggestions/leads.

    Best,

    Managing Director, Design Profile Summary:

Location: Proximity to NYC, northeast corridor

Years of Experience: Roughly 8-10 years, does not need heavy management experience (this is a very small team)

Function: This person is designing processes, tools, trainings related to staff learning and development. Really heavy design, someone really interested in rolling up sleeves, creating and producing content, revising content and working with people to implement it

Skills/Motivations: Incredibly strategic mind (will be spending time in their heads and wrestling with theories and making them come to life). Enjoys working through stuff, hammering it out, as opposed to external interaction on an everyday basis (handles solo project work)

Background: Academia (MBA programs, someone who knows management curriculum), Strategy Consulting (able to do the translation piece of bringing something to life for managers)

Pitfallls: We are not looking people with broad organizational effectiveness work experience (this role is far more narrow in scope), nor are we seeking niche adult learning experts (i.e. created trainings for sales forces or technical trainings), this tends to be folks who haven't done this work at the level deep enough and they really struggle with the theory behind what we are creating

    Dear Alice,

The man you want is Wick Sloane.  He was provost at University of Hawaii and now teaches at Bunker Hill Community college here in Boston.  His issue when he is not teaching is educational inequity.  Just Google him and you'll see a number of great articles on the subject.
