Title: Successful Internationalization: An Assessment of the Performance of
Subsidiaries
Dear List Members:
I'd like to bring your attention to a Professional Development Workshop
being offered at this year’s Academy of Management and invite you to
participate. The session runs Saturday, August 8th, 10:10-12:10 at the
Sheraton Chicago in the Huron Room.
Abstract:
There has been growing interest recently among the largest Latin American
firms to better understand the performance outcomes of their
internationalization strategies. Many discussions have ensued between
academics and companies and yet there still does not seem to be a consensus
as to what constitutes a good measure of performance. For instance, is the
ratio of foreign profits to total profits sufficient? And if so, how do we
encourage the release of that data? The purpose of this PDW is to discuss
strategies and techniques used to gather performance data, and establish a
common metric upon which to build further research projects.
Background:
Performance is a recurrent theme in most branches of management, and it is
of interest to both academic scholars and practicing managers. After three
years of surveying the most international companies in Brazil, the CEOs at
the firms that we are collaborating with have a new question: “Is
internationalization working?” In an attempt to answer this question,
researchers have added a number of questions to the survey of international
firms for 2008. Yet data has been difficult to acquire, and the
reliability has been questionable. This situation prompted a specific
research project surrounding the measurement of subsidiary performance.
Scholars from the International Business area will present various
dimensions and experiences relevant to the assessment of successful
internationalization. Following these presentations will be interactive
roundtables based on the participants’ areas of interest.
PDW format:
- Presentation of organizers and presenters (about 45 min.): the subject
will be presented in multiple dimensions through academic and practical
experiences.
- Round table (about 45 min.): the participants will be split in groups
(according to subject) facilitated by each of the presenters.
- Results presentation (about 30 min): The measures developed in the small
groups will be presented and discussed.
No pre-registration is necessary to attend the session. Yet, the
organizers would appreciate it if potential participants could send a short
email describing the type (i.e., financial, operational, subjective)
measures they are interested in discussing/hearing more about.
