Call for Participants: BPS Dissertation Consortium
Friday, August 6, 2010, 8:30 am-5:00 pm
The BPS Dissertation Consortium will be offered as a pre-conference activity
for doctoral students in strategy at the 2010 Academy of Management Meeting
in Montreal, Canada. This consortium, which complements the traditional BPS
Doctoral Consortium, is intended for students who will be on the job market
during the 2010-2011 academic year (i.e., for jobs beginning Fall 2011). The
Dissertation Consortium provides an opportunity for students to workshop
their job market paper in small groups with distinguished faculty and their
peers. The primary objective is to provide feedback in an informal setting
on the paper that students will be presenting during upcoming job talks. The
consortium will be held Friday August 6, from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, preceded
by a welcome dinner the evening before on Thursday August 5 for those
arriving early.
The co-chairs of the faculty panel for this year's Consortium are Wilbur
Chung (University of Maryland) and Bennet Zelner (Duke). Other faculty
panelists include Jeff Furman (Boston University), David Hsu (Wharton),
Deepak Somaya (University of Illinois), and Mark Zbaracki (Ivey).
Priority for admission into the Dissertation Consortium will be given to
students who have not previously attended the regular BPS Doctoral
Consortium, but any doctoral student in BPS who expects to enter the job
market and graduate during the 2010-2011 academic year (and who is not
applying to this year's Doctoral Consortium) may apply. Interested doctoral
candidates should apply via email to Wilbur Chung at
wchung@rhsmith.umd.edu
by May 31st, 2010.
The application should include:
1. a cover letter/email stating: a) that you are applying only to the BPS
Dissertation Consortium (e.g. you are not also applying to the BPS Doctoral
Consortium); b) a commitment to attend the BPS Dissertation Consortium if
accepted; c) why the Dissertation Consortium is the best fit for you.
2. the most current version of your job market paper from your dissertation
(this is not your dissertation proposal, but a focused part of your
dissertation, with data and some preliminary results).
3. a current CV.
4. a nomination letter from your dissertation chair; the letter should
verify that the candidate is expected to enter the job market and graduate
during the 2010-2011 academic year.
Participants will be notified of their selection in late June, 2010.

The Business Policy and Strategy Division will sponsor a doctoral consortium
during the pre-conference period of the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Academy
of Management in Montreal, Canada. The objectives of the consortium are to

as they shape their dissertations, to give them a chance to meet and
interact with some of their future colleagues, and to enhance their
scholarship, teaching and overall development. To qualify for the
consortium, a candidate must be in the proposal stage of his or her
dissertation with plans to defend the dissertation proposal by September 30,
2010. The consortium will be held on Thursday, August 5 from 6 pm to 9 pm,
Friday, August 6 from 8 am to 6 pm and on Saturday, August 7, from 8 am to
1pm.

and Benjamin Campbell (The Ohio State University). The faculty panel

Consortium, b) your primary division of interest is Business Policy and
Strategy, and c) you commit to accept an invitation to only one doctoral
consortium at the 2010 AOM meetings. Please also indicate in this letter
the number of years you have participated in your PhD program, your
dissertation proposal defense date (on or before Sept. 30, 2010); and why
the BPS Doctoral Consortium is the best fit for you.
2) a nomination letter from your dissertation chair; the letter should
verify that the candidate is working on his/her dissertation proposal and
confirm the candidate?s dissertation proposal defense date.
3) a current CV (1 page maximum).
4) a summary/abstract of your dissertation proposal with 3-5 keywords
identified at the end of the abstract (2 page maximum).
Please email your application to Benjamin Campbell at
campbell@fisher.osu.edu with the phrase ?2010 BPS Doctoral Consortium
Application? in the subject line. The preferred format for items 3 and 4
above is a single Word document, with the items presented in the order
listed and using the candidate?s last name as the file name (e.g., Campbell-
cv-abstract.doc). Please do not send these documents in PDF format.
Providing us with items 3 and 4 in a word document allows us to easily
create a handout summarizing each participant?s information for distribution
to consortium participants. Item 2 may be submitted by the candidate, along
with the other documents, or separately, by the dissertation chair, in
either Word or PDF format. Any questions concerning the Consortium may be
addressed to Janet Bercovitz (
jbercov@illinois.edu) or Benjamin Campbell
(
campbell@fisher.osu.edu). Participants will be notified of their selection
in late June, 2010.
