In this PDW, we will be focusing on First Mover Advantage (FMA) theory and
we will be discussing the extent to what the existing (general) FMA theory
can be applied tout court to different contexts. In addressing these
questions, this PDW will build upon the recent call in Academy of Management
Journal (October 2008) to incorporate more formally in management research
the role of context (Bamberger 2008). We will particularly focus on the
distinction between service context and manufacturing context and we will
address questions including: Is service vs. manufacturing an appropriate
contextualization for FMA theory? Are the FMA isolating mechanisms equally
effective in these different contexts? Is there any empirical regularity for
the existence of FMA in these specific contexts or in any sub-context? The
final output of this PDW will be identification of theoretical perspectives
and research methodologies to incorporate the context into FMA theory.
