Strategic Management Journal key words

I am working on a bibliometric analysis project using the Strategic
Management Journal as a primary data source. In my data of all SMJ pubs
between 1980-2008, there are approximately 3200 unique author-provided key
words. Many of these key words are redundant (but differ in spelling and use
of capitalization) or are very similar, conceptually (e.g., "agency costs"
and "agency problems"). I would like to use a rationalized/standardized list
of author-provided key words. Is anyone on the list aware of such a list? If
not, I am also interested in suggestions on how to develop such a list.
    Thanks in advance.

Corey, I am not aware of use a list (though I may have missed it). You
would be doing a fine public service in creating one, at least in terms
of looking backward at the field (such a list would continue to evolve
    as phenomena and theories evolve).

Donald Hambrick did some research a few years back using strategy lexicon.
Perhaps that would be a place to start. Good luck.

Corey -- What about the keywords used by the AoM for categorizing all conference submissions? They're a few years old now and, though their quality varies by division, many of the early redundancies and omissions from the lists have been addressed. Michael

    Corey,

As you know many journals have a list of keywords that they use in requests to reviewers to indicate their areas of expertise, and to authors to identify the domain of their manuscript. These lists have some initial validity as they have been negotiated, fine-tuned, and are intended to be comprehensive for the domain of the journal.

From my understanding, SMJ does not have such a set list, although it does request keywords from reviewers and authors. In my opinion, the Academy reviewing system has the most extensive and thoughtful lists; the one from BPS may be the most helpful. Along those lines, Rich Makadok, when he was Program Chair of BPS, conducted a tour de force statistical analysis to match reviewers and assign papers to sessions. Perhaps his approach or findings could be of help.

    Erwin.

    Hi Corey:
Great idea.  Several journals use such codes, in part, to assign manuscripts to reviewers.  For example, JIBS has a key word list:
(see http://0-www.palgrave-journals.com.library.lemoyne.edu/jibs/keywords_list.html ) and of course, the American Economic Association uses the Journal of Economic Literature (JEL) codes for its journals and other purposes:
    (see http://www.aeaweb.org/journal/jel_class_system.html )

    Corey,
I don't know of a single cross referenced list. There is a feature
(which I have never figured out how to use) in Web of Science called
'Keywords plus' that might be what you are after.

I had a similar problem in a different context where I had to develop a
relatedness index for variants of key words. The article happens to have
just come out (see below). In a case where you have variant words in a
list and where entries are multiples (each article has multiple
keywords), you can estimate relatedness by co-occurrence. You could
index key words by looking at co-occurrence within author streams rather
than article by article. You might be able to develop a relatedness
index for key words on the basis of works cited in the articles.

Feel free to get in touch directly.

At one time the SMJ published a five year index.  I recall seeing one in the early 1990's.  That might also be a place to start or to validate.

    Hi Corey,

Don Hambrick, Ming-Jer Chen and I reported a study in 2007 [SMJ vol 28(9) p. 335-355] where we extracted a representative lexicon of the strategic management field. Our approach was based on approximating the "consensus view" of the strategic management community by first requesting its members to identity the articles that best represent research in the field and then analyzing the abstracts of those articles to discern the distinctive lexicon of the field.

The 54 words in our lexicon could be a possible wordlist for you to consider, although they are clearly "indirect" in terms of being author-provided.

Here are some heuristics that we used to shorten our word list, while still retaining representativeness

    a) Use a frequency of occurrence cut off point, say 10 or 20 occurrences

    b) Eliminate common language terms, proper nouns, prepositions, articles etc.

    c) Group words with similar roots - Finance, Financial; or Profit, Profitability etc.

    Best wishes for your study.

Subject: Strategic Management Journal key words

    Hi all,

Sorry to those not interested, but it seems like some colleagues would
like to have the following paper as a reference in answering Corey
question. In their empirical research, they searched the key words of
publications on strategy topics and listed them in the appendix.

'The structure and evolution of the strategic management field: A
content analysis of 26 years of strategic management research'

International Journal of Management Reviews,2008 Volume 10 Issue 1 pp. 1?23

You may want to contact the following authors of the paper for these data:

Olivier Furrer, Howard Thomas and Anna Goussevskaia

    Good luck!
