Call for Participants: BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop

    Saturday, August 7, 2010, 1:15 pm – 5:15 pm

The BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop will be offered as a pre-conference activity for doctoral students in strategy at the 2010 Academy of Management Meeting in Montréal. The workshop is open to all doctoral students. The workshop offers practical advice to advanced doctoral students on completing their dissertation and transitioning to their first academic position. The workshop is scheduled for Saturday, August 7, 2010, 1:15 pm - 5:15 pm. Pre-registration is required.

The workshop will be conducted in an informal setting where students will be able to interact with faculty and other students in small groups. Finalists from last year's BPS Outstanding Dissertation Award competition share the coordination of the workshop. These finalists are: J.P. Eggers (New York U.), Felipe Monteiro (U. of Pennsylvania), Mario Schijven (Texas A&M U.), Jochen Schweitzer (U. of Technology, Sydney), and Metin Sengul (Boston College). Senior faculty who will participate include: Siegfried Gudergan (U. of Technology, Sydney), Sarah Kaplan (U. of Toronto), Xavier Martin (Tilburg U.), Andrew Shipilov (INSEAD), and Freek Vermeulen (London Business School).

If you are a doctoral student in strategy, you are encouraged to attend. Small group discussion will allow for interaction of people at similar stages. Topics to be covered include: (a) managing a dissertation committee, (b) considerations on research design, (c) practical and technical issues associated with data collection, (d) seeking a job and preparing the job talk, (e) writing and defending the dissertation, and (f) carving up the dissertation into papers for publication.

Doctoral students interested in the workshop should pre-register at http://secure.aomonline.org/PDWReg. The deadline to pre-register is July 9, 2010. In addition, please submit a brief summary of your dissertation research interests to Mario Schijven at mschijven@mays.tamu.edu with the phrase "BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop" in the title of the email. If you have any questions, please contact Mario Schijven.
